Basic Mitten Pattern
Instructions for medium size to large mittens:
Cast on 44 stitches for a small mitten
Cast on 48 stitches - divide even on 3 needles
Join together and knit the following pattern for the cuff:
Knit 2, Purl 2, until the cuff measures 2 1/2 inches or 3 inches
Knit 6 rounds

Thumb:
Knit 2 Increase in the next stitch, knit 1 increase in the next stitch, knit round
Knit one round
Knit 2 increase in the next stitch knit 3, increase in the next stitch, knit
Round the rest of the needle and the other two needles.
Knit a round
Knit 2 increase in the next stitch knit 5, increase in the next stitch, knit
Round the rest of the needles.
Knit a round
Knit 2 increase in the next stitch, knit 7 increase in the next stitch
Knit round the rest of the needles.
Knit a round
Knit 2, increase, knit 9 increase in the next stitch, knit round
Knit a round
Knit 2 increase, knit 11 increase, knit round
Knit 2 - put 12 stitches on holder, knit round
Knit round until the hand of the mitten reaches the desired length to the tip of the little finger.

Descrease for Top of Mitten:
Decrease at the beginning and end of each needle
Knit ONE round
Decrease at the beginning and end of each needle
Knit ONE round
Continue until there are only 9 stiches left
Cut yarn and draw through the stitches

Thumb:  Pick up the 12 stitches from the holder, pick up 6 stitches from the opening of the thumb.  Have 6 stitches on each of the 3 needles.
Knit to desired length of the thumb
Decrease until there are only 6 stitches left, cut and draw through the stitches.
