Green-e Press Release 2004
Large Donation of Renewable energy to Honor Student Activism
850,000 kWh of Wind and Solar Renewable Energy Certificates Donated to 10 Schools
San Francisco, CA (November 30, 2004) - Students at nine colleges and one high sschool across the nation are being honored today for their efforts to build support for renewable resources and declare independence from polluting forms of electricity. In tribute to thousands of students participating in a “Race to End Dirty Energy,” seven companies selling renewable energy donated 850,000 kWh of Green-e certified wind and solar Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) to ten schools.
Over the past 2 months, more than 27,000 youth signed onto a "Declaration to End Dirty Energy." The Declaration was a result of a collaborative project of Energy Action to increase awareness of the harmful effects of electricity generation and promote renewable resources. From Oakland, CA to Gainesville, FL and Boston, MA, students of diverse backgrounds participated in the “Race to End Dirty Energy,” and pledged support for a cleaner environment.
To acknowledge the students' efforts, renewable energy providers throughout the U.S. have generously donated 105,000 kWh of Green-e certified wind and solar RECs to each of the top ten schools that collected signatures. These schools include: UCLA, Colgate University, Boston College, UCSC, Bishop O'Dowd High School, University of Florida, Brandies University, Temple University, California Polytechnic State University, Bradley University, and Smith College.
The renewable energy providers include: 3 Phases Energy, Bonneville Environmental Foundation, Community Energy, Renewable Choice Energy, Sterling Planet, Sun Power Electric, and Wind Current. All offer Green-e certified renewable energy certificates (RECs). RECs, also known as "green tags," are created when renewable energy is substituted for traditional power. They represent the environmental benefits of renewable energy generation in the form of a marketable commodity that both businesses and individuals can use to offset harmful air emissions from coal and gas-fired generation and help reduce dependence on fossil fuels to produce electricity.
