NUCLEAR POWER

Energy sources: get educated

When I moved out of province I thought my days writing about Point Lepreau were over. Janice Harvey's column (Aug. 25) changed my mind.

It's funny how she brings up cost again (despite the fact that the low fuel cost will offset the high capital). Whenever anyone mentions the cost of the conservation council's preferred sources the response is that we need to clean the air at "ANY" cost. Here's a number they'd prefer you not know: seven million tonnes. That's the amount of air pollution and greenhouse gases that nuclear power avoids every single month in
Canada.

Ms. Harvey falls back several times on the standby scare tactic of radioactivity. I hope she is not afraid of flying: that will expose her to more than 50 times the radioactivity for a single coast-to-coast flight than an entire year of the maximum possible nuclear plant dose. Don't hang out in the basement where the radon exposure will significantly increase the dose. Don't eat bananas because they contain radioactive potassium.

I implore New Brunswickers to educate themselves on the issue and let's clean the air for a few more decades. The best way to do it is find someone who works at Lepreau. Let them explain to you what a great thing nuclear power is.
