Hi
We had a great time in Paris......7 days and 5 nights for $ 500 + taxes
which included Continental Airlines from Fort Lauderdale and 3 star Paris
hotel on the Left Bank.
I took 16 stockbrokers with me. I am now a travel agent with AAA
Travel of South Florida.
We landed in Paris Thursday morning after a night of no sleep on the plane.
A teenager was caught smoking in the middle of the night which did cause a
stir on our aircraft.
After checking into our hotel, we took a 15 minutes walk to the Eiffel Tower
and then took a Seine cruise to Notre Dame. The Seine was at flood
tide, so we turned around at ND as we could not get under the low
bridge.
Friday I was able to find a day tour to the Normandy Beaches which was my #
1 goal as this was my 6th trip to Paris so I wanted to see everything.
In the winter the tour companies cut down on their tours to Normandy
My first two tour companies were charging about $ 200....too much. I was lucky and found a tour for $ 105. We
had a nine passenger mini bus with seven people. We drove 3 hours to
Normandy. Our first stop was at Pointe du Hoc ( where our Rangers had to
scale up the high cliffs on D-Day ) , then to Omaha Beach, the American
Cemetery and Arromanches ( where we sank ships to build the landing and
supply harbor ). I was up at 6:00 AM and got back to the hotel at 8:00
PM.
Saturday we spent most of the day a few blocks from our hotel with Napoleon
and the military museum at Invalides. When the museum closed we went
up to Montmarte for dinner and the Sacre Coeur and Place Pigalle.....very
cold and windy probably below 40 degrees.
Sunday we spent the day at the museum d'Orsay ( the former railroad station
) with Monet, Cezanne, van Gogh and Renoir. Afterward we walked along
the Seine to Notre Dame then dinner in Montparnasse. We started
home after midnight. Our metro station ticket office was closed but we
were able to get down to the metro platform for the last train home.
We did not realize that the metro stops running at 12:45 AM and restarts at
5:00 AM.
Monday I took a tour of the Les Egouts ( Sewers of Paris ) first built in
1370 because of the Black Death. Napoleon built 18 miles of new
sewers. NO smell in the winter....just musty...very interesting. We
did see a visiting rat. The smell in the summer heat can be pretty
bad, we were told.
I then visited the " grandest address in Paris ", the cemetery du
Pere-Lachaise. (Simone Signoret, Jim Morrison, Oscar Wilde, Maria Callas,
Edith Piaf , etc ) Then lunch and to the Louvre. I was so tired
of walking after walking 12 hours every day for 5 days, I gave up about 6:00
PM and went back to our hotel to pack for home. Dinner at a next door
Lebanese restaurant with my Prudential friends. Lebanese lamb and beer
are very good.
Our group thought that this was the best of our many stockbroker trips and
plan on returning to Paris every 2 or 3 years especially at my good price.
$ 115 per night including air and 3 star Left Bank hotel. My
stockbroker group is planning a cruise to Nassau in May which will cost $
125 per night.....Paris or Nassau ?
