Following a brief and sudden illness, Ian Gordon Walker,
of Boca Raton, FL passed away on March 22nd, 2002 at Hospice by
the Sea. The son of Margarite and Dr. Henry Walker, Ian was born
in Philadelphia and attended Penn Charter, the oldest prep school
in the country, and Haverford College. Following graduation, he
joined the U.S. Air Force, spending five years as a fighter pilot
in the United States and Korea with the 5th Air Force. After the
war, he received an MBA. from Harvard Business School, going on to
an executive position with Northeast Airlines in Washington.
Later, he began a second career on Wall Street that lasted forty
years - working with the investment firms of S.D. Fuller,
Packer-Wilbur, Stone-Webster, Kidder-Peabody and his own company
Windmill-Jones-Walker. He spent three years with the Philadelphia
National Bank, specializing in investment and institutional
banking, while living in Bryn Mawr, PA and Princeton, NJ. He moved
to Florida in 1976 where he was associated with Paine-Weber and
Bull & Bear before founding, and heading, Walker and Company.
He served four terms as president of The Stock & Bond Club of
Broward County and three terms as president of the Harvard Club of
Broward County. He represented Harvard as Director of Alumni
Affairs in Florida. Ian also formed The Ivy League Club of South
Florida and was its president three times. He was treasurer of Jan
McArt's Royal Palm Festival Dinner Theatre Center and served on
its Board of Directors. Most recently he was a partner with the
Governor of Polo, Clint Nangle, and internationally known polo
player Memo Gracida, in a new company called World Class, which
provided high-grade equine nourishment products. Ian Walker, a
member of the St. Andrews Society of Philadelphia, was an ardent
and proud Scotsman - having spent time, in elementary school,
studying and living in Edinburgh, Scotland. He had a lifelong
interest in sports, theater, travel, aviation and academics.
Actively participating in all of them, Ian was a philanthropist
with a love of flying and a zest for life. He was also a wizard at
all kinds of sports statistics and would often confound his many
friends with his knowledge of sports trivia. He was married until
1988 to Lois Alava and they had four children: David of
Tallahassee, FL, Susan of Port Townsend, WA, Douglas, of Ft.
Lauderdale, FL, and Anne of Wellington, FL. At his bedside were
his four children and Jan McArt, his dear friend and close
companion. A memorial service and reception will be held at the
First Presbyterian Church, 600 West Camino Real, in Boca Raton on
Tuesday, April 2nd at 7:00 pm. Friends are invited to join Ian's
family and Jan McArt in celebrating and honoring his life. In lieu
of flowers, friends are encouraged to contribute in Ian Walker's
name to Hospice by the Sea in Boca Raton. Funeral arrangements
have been entrusted to Babione Funeral Home of Boca Raton
(561-395-8787).
