Greens Fork Loses Great Friend
Past Chief - Thom La Boyteaux

The Clay Twp. Volunteer Fire Dept. of Greens Fork
in Wayne County mourns the loss of past chief,
instructor and friend Thom La Boyteaux who
passed away unexpectedly at his home,
Friday, May 11, 2001. 

Thom joined the department in 1949 after graduating
high school. Thom served as chief for 28 years from
1968 to 1996.  He received the State Fire Marshal�s
award for Meritorious Service in 1986.  He was a
member of the IVFA and the Indiana Fire Instructor�s
Association.  Thom played a vital role in many east
central Indiana training programs including the
East-Central School of Emergency Services in Richmond. 

He was a veteran serving with the U.S. Marine Corps
and was a member of American Legion #777.  He was
retired from the Johns Manville Corp. of Richmond
after 37 years of service.

He was a member and past master of Williamsburg
Lodge #493, F&AM and had served as secretary
for 40 years.  He was currently in his seventh term
as president of the Clay Twp. Advisory Board and
had served on the Greens Fork Town Council.
He had also served as a Greens Fork Town Marshal.
He was a member of the National Rifle Association and
the National Muzzleloading Association.

On March 21, 2001, Thom received the 2001 Good
Friend and Neighbor Award at the 42nd annual Rural
Urban Banquet in Hagerstown.  �The citizens of Greens
Fork, Clay Township, Wayne County, and the entire
State of Indiana are all blessed to have had a Good
Friend and Neighbor like Thom La Boyteaux.  He was
a mentor to every one of us on the department,� said
Greens Fork Assistant Chief Dave Ramsey.

Thom is survived by his wife of 45 years, Annabelle,
three daughters, a brother, a sister, and several
grandchildren.  Funeral services were conducted on
Tuesday, May 15, 2001.  As a final tribute to Thom,
his casket was placed on top of the new 2001 Pumper
that he played a vital role in for the department to acquire.
Thom's coat and helmet....he may not fill them in person now, but we know he's there in spirit with us always.
