The Clayton High
School Concert Band captured the sweepstakes trophy at the May 1st
Dumas Invitational Band Festival. This is the highest honor possible
for any band. It means that all three judges gave the group a 1st
Division 'superior' rating on their concert performance, and the
sight-reading judge did likewise---for a total of four 1st Division
awards.
The thirty-five piece group performed A Hymn for Band
by Hugh M. Stuart, and Pirates of the Caribbean
by Klaus Badlet / arr. John Wasson.
Larger schools and colleges that have multiple groups rank them
as Concert Bands, Symphonic Bands, and Wind Ensembles; with the wind
ensemble being the 'creme of the crop.' Just last week I decided to
change the name of the Clayton group from 'concert band' to 'wind
ensemble', based on the very excellent work they have been doing.
I felt they deserved the title for their effort and dedication.
Their winning the sweepstakes trophy proves me right. They are
definitely a top-notch group and should be recognized as such. Hence,
no more 'concert band.' The group's official title from now on
will be "The Clayton High School Wind Ensemble."
Next Saturday, May 8th, it's off to Amarillo to perform in the Greater
Southwest Music Festival, followed by an afternoon of fun at Wonderland
Park.
