I met Mr. Hewett this afternoon and I couldn't wait to get online and
tell you how lucky I think you are. He's a great guy and we hit it off
instantly. (maybe band directors just do that, I don't know....but I
was really impressed by him and I want you to know that.)
I know some of you are missing me, and I love you for that.....God
knows, I miss you. But here's how I want you to look at our
situation...how you must
look at it.You and I had a great run together, and though it's end was
nobody's
fault, I will always feel responsible. No matter how great things
may have been in the past, because of me the program was almost
destroyed. I thank God for Mr. Hewett. He's here to save the
program......so whatever prejudices and attitudes
you may have, put them aside and jump in there to help him. The guilt
that I feel right now can best be alleviated by seeing you respond to
him in the same way that you have worked so hard for me in the
past.
Remember that you are the same band, the same award-winning group that
you were yesterday. Only one thing has changed.....a director who was
about to destroy himself, you and your program is out of the picture
and recovering from a severe mental illness. Luckily, you have a new,
young, energetic, creative and intelligent person to move you forward
from this point. Take full advantage of the situation and GIVE THE GUY
A CHANCE! THAT'S AN ORDER!
He's not me.....don't expect him to be. He will have his own ideas and
methods. They are not wrong because they're not like mine. You're just
used to me, that's all. Let him be himself. You guys be flexible
and support him. Don't ever, ever say, "That's not the way Mr. P. would
do it." I have the utmost confidence in him and in his ability to
do great things with you, so don't disappoint me.
Remember these three things.....I'm still close by, I love you all very
much, and nothing pleases me more than having you knock on my door.
