The castle was built in the late 13th century by the Anglo-Norman lord, Gilbert de Clare to consolidate his grip on the lands
he had captured. The castle, a high point in medieval military architecture is an example of the cententic "walls within walls"
system of defence. The castles water defences extend way beyond that of a moat, lakes were created together with artificial islands
making the castle almost impregnable to seige warfare. The castles only sign of weakness is its leaning tower, which even
out-leans the leaning tower of Pisa!)
