The Firstborn Chronomancer scanned the field attempting to understand the enemy commander by the forces he brought to the field of battle. The Firstborn would not enjoy any tactical advantage this day, as the Time Lords were not responsive to his pleas for assistance before the battle. The most remarkable thing that the Firstborn Commander noticed was the distinct lack of Blackblood Ogres on the field. As well, there was not the usual compliment of Assault Warriors either. The Blackblood Commander was leading a young and untested force. This might be easier than expected.
Upon initial deployment, The Firstborn Commander recognized an area of the battlefield that would be ideal for close combat, pretty much out of the way of the majority of the enemy bowmen and positioned his forces to take advantage of the terrain. The enemy commander had spread his forces across the entire battlefield. He was indeed green.
In the opening maneuvers, the Firstborn Repulser Marksmen fired a shot across the battlefield at a Blackblood Alchemist (one of two on the field) hunkered down in a bunker-like ruin. The Marksman hit and wounded the evil enemy who then utilized its black arts and transferred the wound back to the surprised Marksman.
The Firstborn force cautiously advanced through and around the woods waiting to catch the enemy off guard. The Blackblood responded in kind, but did not have the kind and number of forces that could prevail. The Crossbowmen took a few long shots into two groups of Goblins on the far left flank, killing three of them. Meanwhile on the right, the Firstborn Chronomancer recognized the second Alchemist moving into a position to throw a firebomb and interrupted the activity, accelerated the swordsmen and ordered them into the fray. The swordsmen attempted to charge the Alchemist but were met by a squad of waiting Goblin Swordmasters. Eventually the last of the Firstborn Swordsmen was able to reach the Alchemist, forcing him to abandon the attempt to throw a firebomb. Four of the Firstborn Swordsmen met their death in that skirmish, saving many of the senior Firstborn force from a potentially fiery death.
The Black Sisters, poised to strike, raced around the corner and charged a Troll Deathseeker. The Troll succumbed to the onslaught without ever swinging his impressive weapons.
Meanwhile, the Sons of Kronos squad moving swiftly through the forest along a cleared path, were surprised by the sudden appearance of a massive Goblin Myrmidon in their midst. The lead warrior lost his life before the remainder of the squad rained blows on the now frightened beast. Two of the riders were slain and the controller momentarily lost control of the beast as it continued attempting to trample anything in its path. The behemoth eventually exited the forest and upon regaining control, proceeded to trample the Firstborn Longbowmen, killing 2 of the helpless men.
Moments before, the Longbow Leader had positioned himself perfectly to loose a Hail of Arrows on a squad of Orc Swordsmen approaching the Firstborn exposed flank. Three of the four Orcs died in that hail and the surviving leader fled the area in Panic.
Seeing the Myrmidon amongst their brethren, the Firstborn Crossbowmen fired on the massive target, killing it easily.
The Firstborn Judge charged a squad of Ripper Beast Archers that had been attacking a Mounted Knight, killing one of the Rippers and wounding another. The Repulser Knight charged the undefended Alchemist, killing him without breaking a sweat. The Mounted Knight and his Warhorse killed the remaining Ripper Beasts freeing the Mounted Axe to attempt to charge the last of the Blackblood on the right flank. The remaining Alchemist threw another firebomb (the third thrown in the battle, but only the first to explode) knocking down the Repulsar Knight and the Mounted Lancer. The remaining Black Sisters took their turn and gutted the helpless Alchemist where he stood.
The Sons of Kronos leapt out of the woods and killed the remaining Goblin Swordmasters in a clean sweep. The only Blackblood force remaining on the right flank was the Orc Archers. Who ever could act first between the Orc Archers and the Sons of Kronos would attempt to kill the other. The Firstborn moved just a fraction of a second sooner, decimating the Blackblood squad with their ferocity.
The Blackblood Commander, seeing his forces wiped clean decided to live to see another day and marshaled what forces he could in cover, away from the bulk of the enemy. The Firstborn Commander, not wanting to suffer unnecessary losses, allowed the Blackblood to leave the field of battle, while he and his troops celebrated a resounding victory with very little loss of life amongst the Firstborn.
Lessons come hard. Hopefully the lessons of this day would help the Blackblood Commander continue to grow. The Chronomancer watched the Blackblood force retreat, knowing that he might face this Commander again, hoping that the lessons wouldnt be his next time. |
