Claudio Fuentes es el actual director del Instituto de Investigación en Ciencias Sociales, ICSO, de la Universidad Diego Portales. Obtuvo su MA (1999) y Ph.D. (2003) en ciencia política en la Universidad de Carolina del Norte (Chapel Hill). Es Licenciado en Historia de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Fue Director de FLACSO-Chile entre Agosto de 2004 y agosto de 2008.
Su principal interés académico ha sido la política comparada Latinoamericana y las relaciones internacionales. Es autor o coautor de 3 libros y editor de otros 3 libros, y más de una treintena de artículos en revistas académicas y libros en América Latina, Estados Unidos y Europa. Entre sus libros más recientes figuran “La Transición de los Militares” (LOM Ediciones, 2006) y “Desafíos Democráticos” (FLACSO y LOM Ediciones 2006).
Fue invitado a integrar como experto la Comisión Beca Presidente de la República para estudios de post-grado en el extranjero y forma parte del Consejo Asesor del Instituto Nacional de la Juventud. Adicionalmente es coordinador del Grupo de Estudios del Fondo de Ciencia y Tecnología, FONDECYT. En el año 2003, obtuvo el premio a la mejor tesis de doctorado (sección derechos humanos) por parte de la Asociación Americana de Ciencias Políticas, APSA, por su tesis “Contesting the Iron Fist:”. Fue Presidente de la Asociación Chilena de Ciencia Política en el período 2004-2006.

Claudio Fuentes is the current Director of Social Research Institute at the Universidad Diego Portales (Santiago). He obtained his Ph.D. in political science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2003. He has a bachelor degree in History at the Pontificia Universidad Católica of Chile. He received the 2003 Best Dissertation Award by Human Rights Section of the American Political Science Association (APSA). Former Director at the Latin American Faculty of Social Science, FLACSO-Chile (2004-2008). He is the past President of the Chilean Association of Political Science (ACCP- 2004-2006).
He has focused on comparative institutions, observing issues of political and social accountability over the political process. He has published as a author or coauthor six books and more than thirty articles in journal and books in Latin America, the United States and Europe. Among his most recent books are “La transición de los militares” (LOM ediciones 2006), “Desafíos democráticos” (FLACSO and LOM ediciones 2006), “Contesting the Iron Fist” (New York: Routledge, 2004), and “Bajo la Mirada del Halcón (Buenos Aires: Biblios, 2004).
He was invited to be member of the Comission President of the Republic Fellowship for postdegree education abroad and to be part of the Advisory Council of the National Institue for the Youth. He is also the coordination of the Comission of Law and Political Science at the National Fund for Science and Technology (FONDECYT).
