When Roy's father is killed during a secret mission for the Navy, Roy is adopted by Mitchell Hunter and joins his Flying Circus and becoming a 'Big Brother' to Mitchell's son, Rick Hunter.
At first Roy, heeding the wishes of Mitchell Hunter, does not join the war effort instead becoming the centrepiece of the Hunter Brother's Flying Circus at least until the War goes Global. As a result in 1999, Roy joins the Navy and during a brief training period he first meets Claudia Grant. Their relationship, such as it is, is rather rocky due mostly to the fact that not only is Roy absent-minded, he also appears to bring more than one girl on a date.
After trainng he is assigned to the Pacific, where he quickly makes a name for himself as probably the best pilot during that time.
Being in the Pacific however, also meant that Roy witnessed the arrival of the alien spaceship, the shockwave from which wiped out Roy's entire flight-group and the ships they served. Deeply shocked and having a fair share of survivors guilt Roy leaves the military as soon as he's able to return to the Flying Circus as he promised his 'Little Brother' Rick, however, not to long after Roy is approached by Admiral Hayes and asked to be a test pilot for the new Veritech Project.
Roy's acceptance threatens to create a rift between himself and his adopted family, but luckily this is adverted and Roy and Rick exchange letters during Roy's assignment on Macross Island.
It also during the Veritech Test Program that Roy runs into Claudia again and after a number of problems and misunderstandings the two are finally able to be friends, and by the time the SDF-1 is ready to launch in 2009 Roy and Claudia are a well-established couple.
During the first Zentraedi attack on Macross Island, Roy talks Rick through the controls of the Veritech, helps him rescue Minmei from the invaders and later has to rescue Rick and Minmei, when Rick's vertiech is unable to fly.
When Rick and Minmei disappear during the misfold to Pluto, Roy tries to convince Captain Gloval to allow him to go searching for his friend and gets pretty irate when Gloval refuses to let him!
During the SDF-1's return home, Roy manages to convince Rick to join the Veritech Squadron and is usually around to offer advice and support for his 'Little Brother'.
Although he is one of the eldest pilots on the ship, Roy is generally considered, along with Max Sterling the best pilot on board and the Skull Squadron is usually the only Veritech to get through battles with no losses.
When the SDF-1 gets back to Earth and Rick is accidently injured during a mistimed Daedlus Attack Roy is the one who manages to convince the ever-flighty Minmei to take time from her busy schedule and visit the despairing Rick. Roy even gives his prized collection of model planes to Rick to keep his spirits up.
Roy and Claudia look forward to being able to spend more time together now that the SDF-1 is back home, that is until Miriya arrives on the scene.
Goaded on by Khyron, Miriya launches an attack with her Quadronos on the SDF-1 with the intent to draw out the 'Micronian Ace' whom even the Queen of Zentraedi Warriors cannot best.
The Female Power Armour (or Quaedlunn-Rau) is by far the most superior of Zentraedi mecha and many lives are lost during the fierce battle, sadly one of these is Roy's. During the battle, Skull 1 suffers a direct hit and allthough Roy is able to return to the SDF-1 and doesn't seem to consider his injury as too serious, he later collaspes in Claudia's apartment (where they're supposed to be having a dinner of pineapple salad).
Despite best efforts, Roy tragically dies leaving behind a broken-hearted Claudia, a devesated Rick and a generally shell-shocked SDF-1 populace.
Roy remains as one of the great heros of the Robotech War and is often remembered throughout the rest of the war by those who knew him.
