| Ben is first introduced with his best friend Max, after Rick Hunter's promotion to Lieutenant and the formation of the Black Squadron. Ben immediately makes good friends with Rick, due to his gregarious nature. Although Ben is a little over confident of his own abilities as a pilot, he is a welcome face during battles and often shows great courage, unfortunately he's a little slow and always on the look out for adventure, which is what gets him in trouble in the first place. Ben is not much help when he, Rick and Lisa Hayes are captured by the Zentraedi during a recon mission, and it's mostly thanks to the others that they get out of that in one piece. Ben though is promoted with the rest of the group and begins to show improvement in his piloting skills in the following weeks. Ben also enjoys eating, and is often seen at Macross's many resturants enjoying a good meal and making a good joke. Ben is absolutely overjoyed when the SDF-1 finally makes it back to earth, turning cartwheels and clicking his heels when the citizens of macross are finally allowed out onto the Prometheus to celebrate the return. Ben is a bit tackless though, when Rick ends up in hospital after accidently getting shot down, Ben continues pressing the Minmei issue even when it's clear to Max and Roy that Rick doesn't want to talk about it. However, Ben does do his best to help keep Rick's spirits up after the sad news of Commander Fokker's death, although it's pretty obvious that Ben is having more fun at the Steakhouse then poor Rick is. Unfortunately, Ben's luck finally runs out when during the SDF-1's trip to the Ontario Quadrant to drop off the citizens of Macross, the new Omnidirectional Barrier explodes and he is caught up in the wave of destruction and killed. |
