"Brinkley died Sep 10, 1843 in Randolph County. It is believed that he was buried in a family plot near Turkey Bluff, but more recent owners of the land have not preserved it and headstones are no longer locatable, although some family members are still trying to trace the location of the graves. Samuel MANSKER, Brinkley's close friend, was appointed executor of his estate and filed the probate records. They are located at the Chester Courthouse. Claudia: I do appreciate your response and your information. I think I can explain how the story began, at least, how it began for me. In the mid 1960's, I was contacted by Dr. Harold Eugene "Gene" Ragle of California, who was a Bastin/Reed descendant. We began a rather extensive correspondence which lasted several years, resulting in two visits by him and his wife to my home. I still have an extensive collection of letters from him. He also visited several families in Casey CO, KY and wrote a number of small pamphlets about the Bastins, Falconberry, Wall and other families from whom he descended. In researching the Bastins, he was told a story he was told about Sally Reed, who, as a mother, refused to allow her children to play with a small hatchet she possessed. Dr. Ragle concluded that this must be an Indian artifact and that she must have been part Indian, probably Cherokee, which explained why she would not allow her children to play with it. He discounted the fact that other Reeds originated in PA, moved systematically though VA and into the NC region which became TN in 1796, and up over the Cumberland Gap into KY. While I am not a scholar insofar as the Indian Records are concerned, nor am I an expert on Reed ancestry, but I have serious doubts about any researchers capability to document this story from primary and acceptable sources. There is a large Reed population in that particular area of central KY and Sally just happens to be the only one I ever knew who was descended from the Cherokee Indians. I will appreciate being placed on your researchers' list and also appreciate the opportunity to comment on the origin of this story regarding Sally Reed. Eldred Melton."5My13363.ged.
