Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality This Public Health Service agency funds research projects on improving healthcare quality, pain management, domestic violence, children's health, elderly health, prevention, health promotion and other key topics.

Alliance for Health Reform A non-partisan, non-profit group that provides objective health-related information in a number of formats to journalists, elected officials and their staffs, and other shapers of public opinion.

American Academy of Family Physicians. AAFP is the national association of family doctors, with more than 93,100 members in 50 states, D.C., Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Guam. The Academy was founded in 1947 to promote and maintain high quality standards for family doctors who are providing continuing comprehensive health care to the public.

American Dietetic Association. Members include clinical and community dietetics professionals, consultants, food service managers, educators, researchers, dietetic technicians and students representing a wide range of practice areas and special interests, including: public health; sports nutrition; medical nutrition therapy; diet counseling for weight control, cholesterol reduction, diabetes, renal and other health concerns; vegetarianism, food service management in business, hospitals, restaurants, long-term care facilities, and education systems; education of other health care professionals; and research. 

American Medical Association . Provides information that will help patients lead healthy lives and become active participants in their health care, from finding a doctor or hospital to nutritional and fitness articles, to content about specific medical diseases and conditions. Conducts policy analysis, tests model products and provides "real world" training and technical assistance to purchasers of publicly-financed health care, managed care organizations and consumer groups.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Develops and applies disease prevention and control, environmental health, and health promotion and education activities designed to improve the health of the people of the United States. CDC, located in Atlanta, Georgia, is an agency of the Department of Health and Human Services.

Commonwealth Fund/Harvard University Fellowship Program in Minority Health Policy One-year program for physicians who have completed their residency (additional experience beyond residency preferred) combines an intensive year of training in health policy, public health, and management with special program activities on minority health issues. Applicants to the program complete academic work for a master's degree in public health or public administration and receive a $50,000 stipend, full tuition for a master's degree, health insurance, books, travel and related expenses, and financial assistance toward the support of a practicum project.

Community Voices Health care and health policy issues for the underserved.

Cross Cultural Health Care Program Addresses broad cultural issues, such as language barriers, that impact the health of individuals and families in ethnic minority communities in Seattle and nationwide.

Health Promotion Program Dedicated to meeting the needs of Native American people for health promotion and wellness, HPP presents the annual Wellness & Women and the Wellness & Native Men conferences. 

Health Promotion and Disease Prevention, Indian Health Service. The IHS Director's Prevention Initiative is currently working with tribes, tribal organizations, IHS staff, and health consultants to develop a systematic and comprehensive way to focus prevention activities on several Primary Prevention Focus Areas.

Hesperian Foundation Focuses on ethnic and migrant communities and distributes health education materials in English, Spanish, Portuguese and French.  Publications include Where Women Have no Doctor.

Indian Health Service (IHS). IHS is the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for 1.5 million American Indians and Alaska Natives who belong to more than 550 federally recognized tribes in 35 states. Its goal is to assure that comprehensive, culturally-acceptable personal and public health services are available and accessible to American Indian and Alaska Native people. Health Professions Preparatory, Pre-graduate and Indian Health Professions Scholarship Programs  Deadline to apply for these Indian Health Service 2004 programs is February 28.

Indian Health Service Student Loan Repayment Program, Scholarship Programs & Recruitment Program The Student Loan Repayment Program, the IHS Scholarship Program, and the Health Professions Support Team/Recruitment Program increase the number of American Indians and Alaska Natives entering  health professions and assure an adequate supply of health professionals entering IHS service and providing health care to tribes, tribal organizations, and urban Indian organizations.

National Health Law Program. National public interest law firm that seeks to improve health care for America's working and unemployed poor, minorities, the elderly and people with disabilities. NHeLP serves legal services programs, community-based organizations, the private bar, providers and individuals who work to preserve a health care safety net for the millions of uninsured or underinsured low-income people. 

National Indian Health Board Works to ensure that health care needs of all Tribal Governments are met with broad-based advocacy, cutting edge research, policy analysis, training and technical assistance.  

National Indian Women's Health Resource Center National non-profit organization helps American Indian and Alaska Native women achieve optimal health and well being throughout their lives. The Center's Steering Committee represents tribal, urban and Indian Health Service operated programs. They are health providers, health planners, health administrators, and elected tribal leaders with a common concern for the health of Indian women.

Maharishi University of Management, College of Maharishi Vedic Medicine, Center for Natural Medicine and Prevention Has recently been awarded an $8 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to establish a center of excellence for research in natural medicine and chronic diseases in the aging -- especially cardiovascular disease in high risk minority populations.

State University of New York at Albany, Center for Minority Health Research, Education and Training Multi-disciplinary research, education and training center addresses the disparity in health between communities of color and the majority population, seeks innovative methods for addressing race and ethnicity-based disparities in health, and collaborates with community leaders, organizations, and clinics. Projects study barriers to minority health care, the impact of managed care on minority populations, infectious and chronic diseases among minority groups, disease prevention and control, teen pregnancy and violence, and the socio-economic, institutional and cultural factors associated with minority populations.

University of California at Los Angeles, School of Public Health, Center for Diversity Enrichment The Diversity Enrichment Program addresses the needs of individuals from groups designated as underrepresented in the Public Health professions. The focus of the program is on facilitating admission to the School of Public Health and supporting students in completing their training in the degree programs.

University of California at San Francisco, Center for AIDS Prevention Studies, Collaborative HIV Prevention Research in Minority Communities This program is designed to assist investigators conducting HIV prevention research with ethnic minority communities.

University of Michigan, Center for Research on Ethnicity, Culture and Health Provides a forum for basic and applied public health research on relationships among ethnicity, culture, socioeconomic status and health. The Center develops new interdisciplinary frameworks for understanding these relationships while promoting effective collaborations among public health academicians, health providers, and local communities.

University of Wisconsin, Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in Medicine Focuses on the role of race and ethnicity in shaping physicians' and patients' expectations, beliefs, and attitudes; disparities in the effects of many diseases and conditions on racial and ethnic groups; and inequities in health care delivery. Conducts educational programs, research initiatives, and outreach activities.

University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill - Minority Health Project. (Works to improve the quality of available data on racial and ethnic populations, to expand the capacity of minority-health researchers to conduct statistical research and develop research proposals, and to foster a network of researchers in minority health.

National Minority AIDS Council

Native American Cancer Research Native American owned and operated non-profit organization implements cancer primary prevention, secondary prevention, risk reduction, screening (early detection), education, training, research, diagnoses, control, treatment, support, quality of life, and / or studies of cancer among Native Americans. Primary support is from federal agencies (e.g., the National Institutes of Health) and national organizations (e.g., the National Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation).

"UNDERSTANDING DISABILITIES IN AMERICAN INDIAN AND ALASKA NATIVE COMMUNITIES: TOOLKIT GUIDE"  National Council on Disability publication provides information about disabilities, Indian tribes, and resources. Also suggests ways to improve services, provide protections, and tap resources in local tribal communities for people with disabilities. Emergency Evacuation Preparedness: Taking Responsibility for Your Safety.  A Guide for People with Disabilities and Other Activity Limitations", available in pdf, html and Word formats.

Health Promotion for Women with Disabilities . This web site addresses issues shared by women with disabilities, regardless of the cause of their disability. Although not all information will apply to all women, the information can be useful to women who are interested in learning more about their own health and about ways to improve their health and quality of life.

Living Well under the Big Sky: Montana Disability and Health Project

MammaCare Breast Self-examination Program for Women who are Blind or Visually Impaired Commercial site features a patented, tactually accurate model with a ribbon "necklace" to keep the model correctly positioned during training. The model has raised markers to guide the woman while examining the model. The model contains small lumps that are virtually impossible to detect without training.  The system includes an audiocassette and a descriptive video that teach proficient BSE through a series of carefully designed exercises, conducted first on the model and then on the woman herself. The kit also contains a large print booklet and Braille instructions.

National Association on Alcohol, Drugs and Disability Works to improve access to substance abuse services for people with disabilities, provides information on prevention and treatment, and facilitates networking of individuals and organizations.
