Biography

Dixie Virginia Carter was born on May 25, 1939 in McLemoresville, TN. As a small child, Dixie's dream was to become an opera singer, but a botched tonsillectomy at the age of 7 scarred her voice and shattered her dream. However, that didn't stop her from singing! Oh no, she kept at it. And even though she never became an opera singer, she did make a CD with John Wallowitch, titled: Dixie Carter Sings John Wallowitch Live At The Carlyle."

Other than a CD, Ms. Carter also has out two Yoga tapes. Dixie Carter's Unworkout and Yoga for You She also has written a book! Yes a BOOK! (Is there anything this woman can't do?!) Her book is titled is Trying to Get to Heaven -- Opinions of a Tennessee Talker (Yep, that's how I got my title for my page!:) She gives her views on various things and talks about her life, and her family.

Ms. Carter is married to actor, Hal Holbrook. They have been married since 1984. They meet while taping The Killing of Randy Webster But, prior to Mr. Holbrook, her first marriage was to Arthur Carter. (No relation) They were married from 1967-1977, and then she married George Hearn. Their marriage lasted from 1977-1979. Both marriages ended in divorce. On her marriage to Arthur, she had two daughters, Ginna and Mary Dixie. Ginna was born May 17, 1969. Her full name is Rosalind Helen Virginia, she was named after Arthur's mother, Dixie's Aunt Helen, and Dixie's Mother, Gina. (Dixie as well as everyone else called her Mother Gina, pronounced Jinna.) And Mary Dixie was born on July 6, 1970. Mary Dixie was named after Dixie's Aunt Mary and herself.

Dixie has starred in many television series. One of which she is most remember for is Designing Women She played Julia Sugarbaker, the classy, sassy, Southern-Bell. She also played in Diff'rent Strokes as Maggie McKinney, and was in Family Law as sharp-tongued lawyer, Randi King. She's had some guest spots on some of the most popular shows on television. Her most recent was in March of 2005 on ABC's Hope & Faith. (Both she and Hal starred in that episode.)
