Stained Glass was first used in Church windows as far back as 969 A.D. The colours used in the Middle Ages were limited in range and consisted largely of black and tan pigments..

They contained little more than 50% silica sand resulting in a softer glass incapable of standing up to the acid and pollution attacks of the atmosphere. That is why very old glass seems to have minute holes and a filmy quality. Today 75% silica is the norm.  There are glasses made today to try to match this look and are used extensively in restoration projects.

During the thirteenth century the stained glass industry centered around Chiddingford in Surry, England. It was during this time that the art of working with Stained Glass reached high standards.

The earliest examples of Stained Glass Church work in the United States were the windows of the Holy Trinity Church, Brooklyn Heights, New York.
