Many legends exist concerning the discovery of glass. It was known to the Egyptians as far back as 2000 B.C. The first mention of the use of glass in windows was in the third century and was also recorded by Saint Jerome in A.D. 442.

Glass is made by fusing together, at very high temperatures, iron-free silica sand, soda ash, potash and lime.  Various chemicals, metals, and metal oxides are added for color. Gold for example is added to make beautiful breathtaking reds. For that reason some red glass can be quite expensive.

Stained glass is made in "sheets" of various sizes. A working Stained Glass Studio usually keeps a large stock of colors and textures on hand. This allows the artist and the client to preview and choose glass prior to construction. Although the client usually chooses the glass, within each sheet there can be very different patterns, tones and variations. The overall synergy of a particular piece depends on the artist's eye and what cut is used in what particular place so that it "works" with all the pieces surrounding it.
The folllowing pages will give you information about the types of glass available today, so while the pictures are loading take a few minutes to learn more.
