Then
My Life Today

I've been married to Kerry for 22 years (we met as fellow lifeguards many years ago for East Bay Regional Parks). I have two children Matt just graduated from Las Lomas and is bound for UC San Diego in the fall. Rebecca will be a sophomore. After living literally around the world, we keep finding ourselves back in Walnut Creek. I am currently the Chief Financial Officer for a small Medical Robotics company in Santa Barbara. With a home in Walnut Creek, this means that I have to commute weekly back and forth. Quite a drag. At the moment, I am trying to find a new position back in the Bay Area, so if anyone has any leads ....
My wife, Kerry is a Nurse Practitioner at the Student Health Center at UC Berkeley. She has been great in following me around the world in my career, while trying to keep hers intact. The kids are following in their Dad's footsteps (if footsteps apply in a pool) and are very active in swimming and water polo. Both of them have far surpassed anything I have done in these sports though. A real thrill this past year was cheering on Matt and the Las Lomas Men' s Water Polo to its first ever league championship, and then the Men' s Swim Team to a North Coast title! I am looking forward to great things from the Women's side in the next three years. Rebecca has already made quite a 'splash' as she has set a LL record in the 200 freestyle as a freshman.

Now

A Short History of the last 30 Years

Remember the Creedence Clearwater song 'Lodi' about a guy always ending up back in Lodi despite all the times he has tried to leave? Change Lodi to Walnut Creek, and you have a brief history of my past 30 years. After graduating from college, I began my working life as an Industrial Engineer, working in South San Francisco, Memphis Tennessee and then back to Walnut Creek. Got an MBA, moved into finance and worked in San Francisco, San Jose, Hua Hin, Thailand, then back to San Francisco (and living in WC). Then, instead of moving to SoCal when the company relocated, got a new job in Europe, living in Holland. The four years that we spent there were the most exciting, fulfilling years for all of the family. We got to travel all over Europe and got to know the area as residents (as opposed to tourists). But, then we moved back to Walnut Creek. When the company got sold, I took a job in South San Francisco, then got this offer in Santa Barbara. Undoubtedly, the next chapter has to find us back in Walnut Creek again. Along the way, I got married to Kerry. We met as lifeguards at Contra Loma Reservoir in Antioch. Dated for about five years, then married. Two really great kids in Matthew and Rebecca came along in there somewhere.

Future Plans

You know, when you have kids, your lives change so dramatically hopefully in a very positive way. For the past 18 years, our lives have focused on our children, raising them, cheering their successes, and consoling their stumbles. The next few years we will be watching them move into their own independent lives first in college, then on to careers and families of their own. Beyond that, my future plans are to get a job commutable from Walnut Creek of course, and to continue to advance in my career. As the kids begin to move out, Kerry and I will be much more flexible and hope to travel more as a couple.

What I've Learned the last 30 years

I heard a story many years ago, about a young boy who alternates between having great things and horrible things happen to him. The full story is too long to relate here, but the catch phrase of the story is 'you never know'. The point is that we do not know how events in our lives will end up affecting our lives. What may seem like a disaster now, may end up being a tremendous blessing as it leads to new opportunities or changes in our lives. What may seem like the greatest thing that could happen, could lead to something else. You never know.

Message to My Classmates

After traveling and living in many different places, I have really come to appreciate what a wonderful place we grew up in. We often take the familiar for granted, but we were really blessed in what we had.
