The objectives of this curriculum page on Roman culture are:
To introduce the student to the resources on the World Wide Web that apply to Roman culture,
To guide the student to several web sites for the purpose of exposing them to general topics pertaining to Roman culture, and
To provide the student several possible sites to use as resources to both decide and to research a specific topic pertaining to Roman culture.
Please perform the following tasks using the designated web sites.
1. Follow the link "The Forum." Tell at least five things that the average Roman could do in the Forum.
2. Follow the link "School!" What kinds of things did Roman girls learn? What were the three levels of schools for Roman boys?
3. Follow the link "Toys and Games." Name five animals that Romans may have kept as pets.
4. Follow the link "The Gladiator." Give a few reasons why a free citizen may want to become a gladiator.
5. Follow the link "Capital Punishment." Describe the creative method of execution shown in the first of the three mosaics.
Follow the link "Latin 2," then follow the link on the left "Mores."
6. Follow the link "Mail." What were the Roman names of the carriers of public mail and the carriers of private mail.
7. Go Back, then follow the link "Roman Technology," then "Roads." Explore, tell how many miles Roman roads spanned at the height of the Empire.
8. In the top half of the page, read about the typical practice of Roman naming. Identify the three standard parts of a Roman name, and give an example of each.
9. Read the bottom half of the page. Explain the term ius necandi. What was the chance for a Roman teen to have already lost his father to death?
