Replacing the Air Filter on the classic SAAB 900 16V LPT

This guide provides a pictorial description on replacing the air filter on the classic SAAB 900 16V LPT equipped with Lucas injection. Read on and enjoy !

Tools required : flat screwdriver, 8mm socket screwdriver, torx head screwdrivers.

The air filter is located beneath the air mass meter. Start by removing the ribbed rubber bellow above the air mass meter by undoing the jubilee clips and pulling the bellow off.

Undo the cable to the air mass meter by pressing on the steel clip and pulling it off the connector.

Pry on the 3 clips securing the cover to the top of the air filter box.

Lift off the air mass meter, then remove the air filter element together with the bottom plastic insert.

Clean out the inside of the filter box with a wet cloth and remove all traces of dust and dirt.

This filter has suffered mechanical damage as seen below and should be discarded. Black soot on the inner surface indicates that dirt has been passing through the filter.

Example of a filter that has a large amount of dirt, insect and sand on the outer surface. At RM30 to 40 for a new filter, it's not worth vacuuming this filter or blowing through with compressed air to prolong it's life.

Install the bottom plastic insert onto the new filter and lower it into the filter box.

Refit the top cover together with the air mass meter and press down on the 3 clips securing it to the filter box. Refit the electrical cable to the air mass meter by pressing on the connector until it latches securely. Refit the ribbed below and you're done !
