Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Symphony No.26, KV 184 (KV 161a)
Key: E flat major
Further Information
The numbering of the symphonies written in 1773 - 1774 in Salzburg (Nos. 22 through 30) are not in accordance with their order of composition. Thus, this one is actually the earliest of these nine. It is a brief, Italian-style symphony in three movements played without pause, lasting scarcely eight minutes. Its opening movement is very fast, but serious in tone; the middle section, an Andante, is reflective, and the conclusion is celebratory. Sources say this symphony was used as the overture to the play Thamos, King of Egypt, for which Mozart wrote the incidental music.
