This Salzburg symphony was composed in 1772. There is a broad tempo in the first movement, and Mozart plays for the symphonic form to the extent that he frequently toys with the listener's sense of formal orientation. In addition, Mozart is unusually free in his modulations in this symphony. The slow movement is like a gavotte, while the finale is a typical Italianate movement, such as Mozart frequently wrote in this period following his family's trips to Italy, but is graced with an uncommonly attractive melody. There are only three movements, and the symphony is only about 12 minutes.
