Mozart took about a year off from composing symphonies, but resumed his output in Salzburg in summer of 1771. No 13 in F, K 112 was written late in the year, finding the Mozart family on a rather brief to Italy, which explains the Italian character of the first movement. The final movement is humorous, particularly in the way the sad episodes are simply ignored. The Italian influence persists in No 14 in A, K 114, with comic opera opening chords in the final movement and a lyrical first movement and the sound of a Milanese dance in the minuet.
