Sarasate, Pablo de
(1844-1908)
Spanish violinist and composer. He was born Pablo Martín Melitón Sarasate y Navascuez in Pamplona.
He studied music at the Paris Conservatoire. Sarasate devoted most of his career to concert tours in Europe, the Americas, and the Orient.
Several works were composed for him, notably the Introduction et rondo capriccioso (1870) by the French composer Camille Saint-Saëns and Symphonie espagnole (performed 1875) by the French composer Édouard Lalo.
Among Sarasate's own compositions is the popular Zigeunerweisen (Gypsy Melodies, 1863).
