Notes

Note 1: Records of teams that have withdrawn during qualifying are not counted here unless their record are part of the final official tables (or official results) in question. See several examples of this below. (Their records at withdrawal are shown here for information purposes though.) Note 2: Teams that have not played any (officially counted) games during a tournament have not got that tournament counted here. One example of this is Equatorial Guinea which in the preliminary round had a w.o. vs. Benin and then themselves submitted a w.o. in the first qualifying round vs. Guinea in the qualification for the 1982 tournament. DR Congo have also played under the names Congo-Léopoldville and Zaire respectively. Benin was called Dahomey before. 1957-94: South Africa disqualified because of Apartheid. 1957 & 1959: No qualifying tournaments. 1962: Some sources state that Uganda eliminated Sudan in the 2nd qualifying round but no results have been found. 1963: Guinea were disqualified after not having provided neutral officials for the 2nd qualifying game vs. Nigeria. However, as the results of the two games stand as official they are counted here. Guinea "just" lost their final tournament place. 1965: Some qualifying matches possibly missing for Mali, Guinea, Egypt and Cote d'Ivoire. 1974: Central African Republic were disqualified after the two 1st round qualifying games vs. Cote d'Ivoire. The results were allowed to stand though. 1978: Tunisia walked off the field in the 42nd minute at the score 1-1 during the 3rd place game vs. Nigeria. The game was awarded 2-0 to Nigeria. 1986: Ethiopia won the first match in the first qualifying round vs. Tanzania but withdrew after that. The result was allowed to stand though. 1994: The following teams withdrew after having played matches in the qualifying (within brackets their record at withdrawal - please note that those records are NOT counted in the totals! See note 2 above): Togo (6 0 4 2 1-7 4), Chad (2 0 0 2 0-5 0), Tanzania (2 0 2 0 3-3 2) & Burkin Faso (2 0 1 1 1-4 1). 1994: Algeria was disqualified for the use of an ineligible player after the qualifying was concluded. The record they had managed at the time of disqualification was allowed to stand in the official qualifying table though. Senegal took Algerias place in the finals. 1996: Several teams withdrew after having played matches. However, in neither of those cases did the matches played count in the official tables. They are shown here for information purposes within brackets after each concerned team. South Africa (withdrew as they hosted the final tournament as Kenya withdrew) (2 1 1 0 2-1 4), Lesotho (6 1 0 5 3-16 3), Guinea Bissau (3 0 1 2 3-8 1), Gambia (5 0 3 2 4-7 3), Niger (5 1 0 4 8-16 3), Madagascar (1 0 0 1 0-1 0). 1998: Sudan (1 0 0 1 0-3) & Sierra Leone (2 0 0 2 0-3 0) withdrew during qualifying. Sierra Leones results are counted here as they were counted in the official tables. Central African Republic (1 0 0 1 2-3 0) disqualified because of unlawful meddling by the Central African Republics government in football affairs. 2000: Sierra Leone disqualified during qualifying. 2002: Guinea disqualifed during qualifying. 2004: The last qualifying game between Tanzania and Sudan was never played. 2006: The qualifying doubled as qualifying for the World Cup 2006. Egypts results are counted for all other teams in the qualifying group but NOT for Egypt as Egypt only can be said to have participated in the World Cup qualifications. Egypt was qualified for the African Nations Cup finals as being hosts and not as a result of a qualification. The results Egypt achieved were counted in the official tables. 2008: Djibouti withdrew from the qualifying after the draw had been made but no matches played.
