Habitat uses three criteria to select homeowners: need for adequate shelter, ability to pay, and willingness to partner. We select families in a manner that complies with all federal laws prohibiting discrimination and once selected, Habitat works in partnership with these families. Our homeowners are required to complete 400 hours of "sweat equity" before moving into their home.
Normally, we accept applications in the Spring of each year. Interested families can contact the affiliate in March to find out more information. We hold an orientation and informational meeting at which point applications are distributed. However, our application process will be closed this year because of our already substantial waiting list of accepted families.
We welcome local and out-of-town volunteers year round! Our busiest building time of the year is in the Spring when we welcome numerous Collegiate Challenge groups into Clarksdale to assist in the build process. We also are very thankful the various Church work groups that decide to volunteer their time down in the Delta, mainly in the Summer and Fall months.
Without the support of outside donors and volunteers, it would be very difficult for us to fulfill our mission of helping to eliminate sub-standard housing in the Delta.
