| The cadets of Clarksburg Squadron take on a new interest... Color Guard! The Knights began when Cadet DeAngelo of NJ joined their squadron and taught a few lessons on color guard. Some inspired cadets decided they wanted to learn more. Col. Moore gave the go ahead to compose a team who would go on to the West Virginia Wing Color Guard Competition. The team consisted of cadets, mainly those who have just received their Cadet Airman stripe. They began their training at the unit meetings which left them only 4 two-hour meetings of true practice. Mike Hildreth managed to memorize every command by heart in a very short period of time. Finally the competition day was here. Believe it or not we had so many things go wrong! One of our cadets had the wing patch on the opposite shoulder, and had to use my uniform pants for competition because she forgot hers! In inspection they did an awesome job of reporting in, standing at attention. For Standard Drill they ran into a small problem when the flag pole hit the backboard of the basketball hoop, but kept with it anyways. Cadet Pauley lost her flight cap in the process and kept on going as if it never happened; great discipline! During the outdoor practical they did an excellent job of adjusting to the situation. Indoor drill was a bit of a trouble for them. They assessed the layout perfectly and didn't make any incorrect movements but were off on footing. Everything else pretty much went smoothly. They all were proud of the test scores they had. Our very own cadet strovers even got the highest score. The mile run was interesting. Cadet Pauley literally missed female fleet award by 7 seconds. I told her not to walk! Overall they received 3rd place even though they did an overall 1st place performance because the other teams claimed to be practicing for months or even year-round for the competition. |
