This is the one that started it all. Turned comics from mostly newpaper reprints into a true American artform. Originally created in 1933 by Jerry Seigel and Joe Shuster, Superman was alot less SUPER when he 1st appeared in Action Comics # 1 He couldn't fly yet ( hence the "Can leapt tall buildings in a single bound" line ) and his whole origin was alot less well defined for the 1st year or so. Action Comics #1 kicked off what is officially called in comic circles as"The Golden Age" . A very rare book to find in Mint Condition, only 4 copies are known to exist. The last one that came on the market sold at a Sothby's Auction in New York for over a quarter of a million dollars.
The Adventures of Superman "seems" to have begun its publising history back in 1986. However, in actuality, it's numbering was picked up from the original Superman series begun in 1940 when said series was cancelled with the advent of the "New" series created by John Byrne. The most major contribution this series has had in the Superman Universe has been the work of writer / artist Jerry Ordway, whose work on this title has been nothing less then stunning.
Not only is The Man of Steel the most recent addition to the Superman line of Regular Series. It was also the name of the Mini Series that kicked started the sales of all the Superman titles in the Mid 1980's. This was brought about by the stunning work of fan favorite writer / artist John Byrne when he literally re-wrote much of the Superman mythos in the original six part series
By 1940, with average sales exceeding two million copies per month, Superman moved from being the headliner in Action Comics to his own title. Monthly publication was uninterrupted until 1986 when the series was cancelled with # 423 to make way for the new series created by John Byrne
