Great Danes
The Apollo of Dogs
Great Danes originated from Germany and there is evidence that there were similar dogs to the Great Dane in ancient Greek and Roman times.

The Great Dane was orginally developed from the boarhound and were used to hunt large game in the Middle Ages.  The Germans are given credit for having developed the breed to the Great Danes we know today.  It has been suggested that they were crossed with ancient Mastif and Irish Wolfhound.

The Great Dane is the tallest of the dog breeds and very regal in apperance.  The Great Dane has strength, dignity , and elegance combined with a loyal, affectionate, patient nature that makes them a great family pet.

Despite their large size Great Danes love the comforts of being an indoor pet and make  excelent members of the family.

Great Danes come in a varity of colors.  For showing in Dog shows only six colors are recoginized: Blue, Black, Fawn, Harliquin, Mantles and Brindle.  But Great Danes can also come in Merles, White, Fawniquins, Merelequin, and Fawn Mantles.  No matter the color these Gentle Giants make wonderful pets.

Great Danes range in size and weight:
For the Male; 30"-34" and 120-200lbs
For the Female; 28"-32" and 100-130lbs.

Great Danes do not have a long life span and the usual life span is from 7 to 10 years.  The average litter size is 5-12 pups.
