Negative Things

Some of the negative things about Virtual Reality are;

Cost: New technology is expensive. The cost of developing hardware and software for the application of virtual reality technology is too great for many institutions to implement at this time. Computer instrumentation is expensive after introduction but has always decreased over time; so I suspect as this occurs virtual reality will eventually become more commonplace in Medicine.

Restraint: Presently the equipment used to create a virtual environment is restrictive and uncomfortable to its users. This would have to be overcome for more convenient uses in surgical procedures.

Virtual reality will use us in the future by becoming too large for us to control. It might be used so often, that people will use the virtual world as a means of escape. They will live in this perfect VR world that they have created so they won't have to face their real life problems or fears. Also, with the over-use of VR, the border line between the VR world and the real world will become vague. Like any other technology created by man, there are negative and positive effects of virtual reality.

There have been studies done that show the health hazards of head mounted displays. After about ten minutes of use, the distance of vision decreased, became blurred, and there was binocular stress in more than half the subjects. Other tests proved that with a deeper viewing distance, the eyes are more comfortable , but these HMD's lead to not blinking often or staring. The user must be told ahead of time to look away every so often to adjust their focal point. Other problems which result are tripping and falling over objects of the real world, electrical safety, accidents after using the HMD's (such as flying a military aircraft with no time of adjustment between the virtual world and the real world), and simulator sickness. Simulator sickness is when, after using HMD's, there is a lack of coordination between the eyes and the inner ear. None of these effects are really big, but most likely, when we reach the stage of high development of VR, more negative effects will arise.
