The originator of Crystal Pages, Rohiniranjan is a self-taught astrologer from India who created this site and the material offered here (and elsewhere) for the dissemination of jyotish information through cyberspace media to interested individuals. Elsewhere on this site one will find articles on Jyotish, the vedic craft of astrology. Practical applicability is the primary gold standard in Jyotish. Each chart studied and the sharing of information by the nativity it belongs to are the crucial ingredients in the learning of jyotish. Books and articles of an illustrative or research-oriented nature are helpful, but the only acid test of the usefulness of any divinatory language and craft, such as Jyotish, in this earthly realm lies in how well it works and how close to reality it really is. Jyotish is a discipline that is akin to a vast ocean and offers an enormous variety of approaches even within its general framework. Some individuals work under the ambition that they would unearth a simple one size fits all method or approach; however, should this have been the case, we would not have been left with so many diverse tomes that form the primary text books on jyotish by the Saint giants of yore, on whose shoulders we puny astrologers stand today.
Right from the beginning of setting foot on the path of jyotish, one cannot avoid but being impressed by its inherent power and flexibility, a truth that sometimes does not get conveyed properly and makes people mistakenly think of jyotish as some very rigid and exotic way of looking at the 'human experience'. This is simply incorrect.
The individual style in which jyotish is practiced is obviously a personal choice and no single straight and narrow path exists. Learning it can be easy or difficult depending on how sincere an effort one willingly puts into learning and practicing it. There are plenty of books available in the marketplace which can provide adequate background and compendia of rules and conditions that the fledgling academic jyotishi needs to learn from. Compared to these, very few books (ancient or modern) containing detailed practical examples exist. This glaring hiatus in practical learning is fulfilled to a certain extent by magazines, such as The Astrological Magazine, Express Starteller and The Times of Astrology (as well as others) which often provide real examples from life and form a indispensible vehicle for learning.
The importance of a guru, teacher or mentor cannot be stated enough, but finding a guru is a lifelong project. While such is being done, the best way to learn practical jyotish is to have a network of interested friends and perhaps a mentor with whom one can discuss charts to try and learn how to make the dry, terse and sometimes perplexingly counter-intuitive rules come to life.
