Ok, so look at it this way: If I give my clarinet a name, say Anne, it would be stuck with a personality, just like every person named Anne has a personality. Granted, it's their own personal personality that no other Anne has, but it's a single personality. And what happens when Anne tries to be something she's not? Disaster. So if I don't name my clarinet, then it's not bound to anything--like eras, genres, styles, techniques; it's versatile, original, and wonderful! It can adapt and change, because it's not stuck with a single personality.
