Remember Me

By: Swoopes ([email protected])

Wedding bells filled the church as Alex walked down the aisle on a day that most thought would never come. A cowboy and an assistant district attorney was not a normal combination, but they worked things out. The ceremony ran smoothly and she was happy to have her closest friends there on this important day. However, she could not bear to look him in his eyes. Instead she stayed focus on the groom’s eyes as he said his “I do’s.” It was now her turn.

“Do you Alexandra Cahill, take this man Dalton Reed to be your lawfully wedded husband from this day forward, in sickness and in health, for richer and poorer, for better and worse till death do you part?”

Confidently Alex said “I do!” in her strong ADA voice.

“I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss the bride,” the preacher said as the bells and clapping started again. The newly married couple joined in their first kiss as husband and wife before turning to family and friends. After a few congratulations, Alex and Dalton made it to the reception for the rest of the evening.

“Where could he be?” Alex asked herself. Somehow she got a feeling of his presence that came from the chapel. Opening the doors of the chapel, Alex saw just what she expected. A lone figure standing at the front of the room, facing the cross in deep thought. Alex moved towards him with caution as not to disturb him.

“Alex, you shouldn’t be here,” the figure said in a low quiet voice.

“Walker? Can we talk?”

“Talk? About what? I see no need to talk anymore. It is final, you are now Alexandra Reed and I’m truly happy that you found happiness and love.”

“Thank you for being here Walker. I know it isn’t easy for you, but I appreciate it.”

“That’s what friends are for Alex.”

During the conversation, neither Alex nor Walker had noticed the person who came into the room. “We are more than friends, Walker,” Alex informed.

“Not anymore Alex. We are just friends and nothing more will ever be.”

“We are BEST of friends, Walker. My marriage to Dalton doesn’t change that.” The person in the back was not able to make out the words of the conservation, but was able to see the friends embrace in a hug.

“What have I done? They are perfect for each other and I got in the way,” the person thought to himself. Walker and Alex standing at the front of the church was meant to be and he knew it. Quickly standing up to leave, the person accidentally tripped over a pew. The noise spooked the friends as they turned in the direction of the sound.

“Dalton?...”

“Dalton Reed to the grandstands! Dalton Reed to the grandstands!” came the announcement over the speakers. Hearing his name brought him out of his dream only to find no one beside him. A quick search of the trailer confirmed the truth that Alex had already left so Dalton finished getting dressed before going to the grandstands. For some unexplainable reason, Dalton had an urge to look out the window. When he did so he found Walker and Alex embraced in a hug. The sight was overwhelming and at that moment Dalton realized he was holding on to something that wasn’t truly there. He had to let her go and soon.

“It can’t work. It just won’t.”

“Why?”

“This is his life. This is what makes him happy.”

“You make him happy, too.”

“Yeah, but not as much as the circuit. That’s why we didn’t work out the first time.”

“Well he can’t ride the circuit forever and he does love you. You can see it in his eyes.” As Alex looked into the eyes of the man standing before her, she saw love. This love was strong and would always be there.

“Oh, Walker. What am I going to do?” she asked as she moved towards him for a hug. When he held her in his arms she felt safe and everything seemed right with the world. This embrace brought comfort to Alex although it did not help solve her problem. Dalton and her were in love several years ago, but what about now? Were they still? On the other hand, there was Walker. She loved Walker and she knew he loved her, but their relationship had only slowly progressed in recent years. Fact was, even if their relationship never became one of marriage she would rather have Walker in her life than not, but how was she to tell Dalton?

Over the next several hour many things took place that made it hard for Dalton and Alex to talk. Dalton was once again shot at, but his friend, Barney, was killed instead. As if that wasn’t enough a lady tried to blow up Dalton’s truck, but once again Walker saved the day. Dalton then watched on as Walker and Alex embraced in a hug. He had to let Alex go. It was the right thing to do even if it did hurt his heart.

Later that evening, Dalton was able to find Alex alone. It was time to do the right thing. “Alex, can we talk?”

“Actually Dalton I need to talk to you too.”

“Can I go first please? This is very important. Alex, I know in the past we were in love and had something meaningful before I messed things up. Now, that we have been her together at the rodeo, I think me and you don’t have the same feelings anymore. There is someone that can offer you a life better than I can and I don’t want me to hold back that relationship. You’ll find a better love, strong as it ever was, deep as a river runs, warm as the morning sun.” As Dalton spoke he was quiet, but his voice was filled with love as he spoke the truth. Alex knew what Dalton meant. She had found a better love and it was with Walker. “Give me one more season in the circuit, but if you find happiness you won’t have to worry about me coming back. I hope you find that happiness you are searching for Alex, but please remember me.”

After that conversation, Alex and Dalton never crossed paths again. Except for a note Dalton sent her after Walker and her had announced their engagement.

Dear Cahill,

I just heard the news. I’m glad you found love. I knew I was breaking up something special between the two of you. My your future with Walker be filled with love and happiness. These words remind me of you ever time I hear them. May they do the same for you.

And all our tears have reached the sea

Part of you will live in me

Way down deep inside my heart

The days keep coming without fail

New wind is going to find your sail

That’s where your journey starts

You’ll find better love

Strong as it ever was

Deep as a river runs

Warm as the morning sun

Please remember me

Just like waves down by the shore

They’re goin’ keep coming back for more

Cause we don’t ever wanna stop

Out in this brave new world we seek

Oh the valleys and the peeks

And I can see you on the top

You’ll find better love

Strong as it ever was

Deep as a river runs

Warm as the morning sun

Please remember me

Remember me when you’re out walkin’

When snow falls high outside your door

Last at night when your not sleepin’

And moonlight falls across your floor

When I can’t hurt you anymore

You’ll find better love

Strong as it ever was

Deep as a river runs

Warm as the morning sun

Please remember me

Please remember me

Alex had found that happiness she was looking for; it was with Walker. They had a love that was explainable. It could withstand anything and with each passing day it grew stronger. This new love that was forming was because of Dalton and Alex would never forget him even though her heart belonged to only one man now. Walker!
