Behind the Walls
By: Kathy [email protected]
As Walker and Alex walked through the hospital parking lot toward
the truck Alex marveled at how Walker made her fall more in love with him
everyday. She had watched him with tremendous awe and pride as he talked to and
prayed with Adam in his father's hospital room. Walker truly is an
extraordinary man she thought to herself as he helped her into the truck.
As they drove away from the hospital Alex smiled to herself as she realized they
were headed toward the ranch. She loved the fact that Walker didn't even ask
anymore. He automatically knew she would want to go home with him.
They had a light supper and settled down it the living room in front of the fireplace.
Alex snuggled against Walker and he wrapped his arms around her. They sat in
silence for a long time simply enjoying the time together. Then Alex spoke.
"You know I was wrong earlier in the elevator"
"Wrong about what?"
"Wrong when I said nothing would help. It might not help the case any, but
just being here in your arms helps me to feel better."
Walker smiled slightly and pulled her a little closer. As she continued, "When
you hold me like this it is almost as if we can shut out the rest of the world
and it is just us."
"I know it makes me feel the same way," he said as he kissed her
hair.
They sat in silence again for a while longer. Then Alex turned to Walker;
"I must be rubbing off on you."
"Oh"
"When we were in the elevator and you said that talking about the case
might help. It sounded a lot like something I would say to you."
"You have definitely rubbed off on me and changed me in so many
ways."
Alex stroked his beard. "That works both ways you know, I've changed
because of you too."
He pushed a strand of hair from her face. "I can't imagine what my life would
be like now if you weren't in it. In fact I probably wouldn't have much of a
life at all." He swallowed hard before continuing. "You saved me from
myself. I put up so many walls. I was so afraid to let anybody in. But no
matter how hard I tried to stop you. You keep pushing until you knocked the walls
down."
She smiled at him as she gently ran her hand up and down is arm. "I knew what
was waiting behind those walls. So it was well worth the effort. I was watching
you with Adam at the hospital. I was thinking how truly lucky I am to have you
to share my life with. You are the most amazing, most caring, dedicated,
generous, intelligent and not to mention sexiest man I have ever met."
Walker took her face in his hands and looked into her eyes. "I know that I
don't tell you nearly enough, but I hope you do know how very much I love
you."
Alex nodded slightly. "I do know and I love you too." He placed his
hand behind her head and pulled her into a breathless kiss.
