In recognition of their public service to community, dedication to educating youth and commitment to promoting social justice, peace and harmony, a scholarship was established in 1994 in honor of Lee Joo Young and the late Chung Man Soo.

Since 1983, Chung and Lee have served the Los Angeles Korean American community by recycling aluminum cans and donating the collected proceeds to community projects including a scholarship for Korean American students. In spite of the hypertension that pained him in his later years, Chung never stopped raising funds for the community.  After Chungs death, Lee has continued to collect cans alone.

This scholarship awards $1,000 each to two Korean American college undergraduate or college-bound students who have a commitment to social justice and community service.

Eligibility
Korean American college undergraduate or college-bound students residing in the United States and in need of financial assistance.

Application Process
The Personal Essay should be typed, 2-3 pages in length, in either Korean or English, and addresses your interest in social justice and how this relates to the Korean American community.

Following the review process, the Scholarship Selection Committee will contact potential candidates for an interview.  Final notification of scholarships awarded will take place by April 15, 2002.  Recipients of this scholarship are strongly encouraged to take part in community or voluntary service at an organization under the recommendation of the Korean Resource Center.
