- The Claremont Resort and Spa adds a 6 million dollar wing with 40 deluxe guest rooms, bring the total number of guest rooms up to 279.
- The Club at the Claremont undergoes major
expansion. Swimming pool added.
- 1998
- KSL Recreation Corp., a subsidiary of Kohlberg, Kravis,
Roberts and Co. (KKR), purchases the Claremont Resort and
Spa (commonly known as the Claremont Hotel or simply, the
Claremont).
- KSL attempt to fire all workers fails
due to union contract.
- 40 nonunion Spa workers
fired.
- Summer 1999
- New traffic signal on Tunnel Rd. specifically
for the Claremont.
- Tunnel Rd. widened.
- 15 employee parking spaces lost.
- Mature shade trees
destroyed.
- Landscaping removed.
- Fired Spa workers picket the Claremont, charging age
discrimination.
- Spring 2000
- 16 million dollar hotel renovation begun at the Claremont.
- 1.5 million dollar seismic retrofit begun at the Claremont.
- February 2000
- Zhone Technologies, a subsidiary of KKR, breaks ground on its world headquarters, a four building office, R & D, and manufacturing campus in Oakland. Mayor Jerry Brown delivers speech praising Zhone.
- April 2000
- April 6 A neighbor notifies residents of the proposed
Claremont Expansion.
- April 7 Claremont Expansion Website published.
- April 13 column by Chip Johnson
of the Chronicle links the Lake Chabot Municipal Golf
Course Privatization by KSL and the Claremont
Expansion.
- April 26 Meeting at the Claremont. Representatives
from Berkeley City Council member Polly Armstrong's
office and Oakland City Council member Jane
Brunner's office attend.
- May 2000
- Jane Brunner's open meeting of May 6. Lake
Chabot Municipal Golf Course, Claremont expansion
discussed. Attendees include:
- Ted Axe, vice president and general manager of the Claremont
- Dave Robbins, VP of KSL
- Berkeley Mayor Shirley Dean
- Alameda County Supervisor Keith Carson
- Oakland City Manager Robert Bobb
- Claremont-Elmwood Neighborhood Association Annual General Membership Meeting of May 24
- Ted Axe, developer/CENA member Daniel Lieberman, and e list coordinator/CENA member Elizabeth Kibbey discuss Claremont Expansion. Shirley Dean urges Axe to work with the community before submitting plans to Oakland officials.
- Interested parties meet with the aforementioned speakers in a separate room while CENA meeting continues. Axe agrees to a series of regular meetings with the community. [The e list later became the neighborhood organisation Berkeley Oakland Neighbors of the Claremont (BONC).]

Council discusses Lake Chabot Municipal Golf Course.
- June 2000
- Lake Chabot
Municipal Golf Course Draft EIR presented to city. 45 day
public comment period begins.
- Public meeting on major
conditional use permit for Lake Chabot.
UPDATE: For some reason this happened 7 months later than KSL hoped.
- July/August 2000
- Main (Tunnel Rd.)Entrance
monument construction begins. Median strip added to main entrance road. Gatehouse moved further up road.
UPDATE: This never happened.
- Public comment period for Lake Chabot Draft EIR ends.
City of Oakland makes its decision, which can be appealed.
UPDATE: For some reason this happened 7 months later than KSL hoped.
- 40 Year Lease of Golf Course for KSL. City of Oakland
pays KSL 2-3 million dollars. Resident golf fees increase
150%. Claremont guests can receive discount.
UPDATE: This has not yet occurred.
- September 2000
- The Draft EIR for the Claremont will be started sometime after Labor Day, with no estimated date or month of completion, according to Ted Axe.
UPDATE: This has not yet happened.
- October 2000
- The Claremont moves and doubles the size of its Spa; doubles the
size of its Club.
- 2001 Phase I Claremont Expansion Begins
- Construction of 90 room wing and the parking facility
begins.
UPDATE: For some reason this has not yet occurred.
- March 2001
- KSL presents Draft EIR for privatization of Lake Chabot Municipal Golf Course to city. Advisory Commission votes against the KSL plan.
Claremont replants strip of trees along Ashby Ave. nearly 2 years after cutting them down. Also replants along Alvarado.
- 2003-2010

Phase I Expansion Ends 2.5-5 years after construction
begins.
