Garnet Morris

Garnet Morris was born in 1889, in Great Rissington, the son of Richard and Anne. He enlisted at Bourton on the Water, in Aug 1914 and joined the 2nd Worcester Regt, later transferring to 1/6th Territorial Royal Warwickshire Regiment. He had seen action in Loos and been through the whole Somme offensive.

Garnet was in the action during the German retreat to the Hindenberg Line between 14 March and 5 April 1917.

SAULCOURT

1.4.1917    The Bttn. took part in an attack by Infantry Brigade on Epehy and Poziere. The Bttn. attacked and was supported by 1/5th Royal Warwickshire Regt. - B, C and D Coys. had A Coy. in reserve. Attack commenced at dawn. The whole objective was secured by 6.40am. Casualties - 2/Lt. R B W Gosse died of wounds. Lt G H L Eastbrook, wounded. Captured one field and machine gun.

EPEHY

2.4.1917    Held new outpost line in front of Epehy - Casualties, 2/Lt S E Bowden wounded. OR's, 1 killed, 1 died of wounds, 2 wounded. Relieved at dusk by 1/5th R. Warks Regt. D.C.M. granted to No; 240276 Pt. Richmond DC.

GREBAUSSART WOOD

3.4.1918    In support of HQ and B & C Coys. in Saulcourt Wood. A Coy. attached to 1/5th R. Warks Regt.

TEMPLEUX

5.4.1917    In DW reserve trench. Stood to at 6am as reserve for 145 Infantry Brigade who were attacking Ronssoy-Lempire.

PEZIERE

14.4.1917    Relieved 5th Lancashire Fusiliers on left Bttn front. A Coy. dug in four posts.

16.4.1917    Carried out a night attack with 5th Royal Warks on right. Assault timed for 10pm. Terrible weather conditions. Objective gained on half the front. Capt. J N G Stafford and 2/Lt J Harrison killed. Casualties - OR, 10 killed, 32 wounded, 2 missing, captured 1 machine    

17.4.1917    Relieved by 1/8th Royal Warks. Three MM's awarded during this period.

Garnet was killed in action on the 16th April 1917. The diaries are very brief for this battle, but Garnet must have been one of the casualties mentioned as KIA in the 16th July entry.
