| "I think my earliest memory of acting was playing a monkey in a school play, when I was about six. I had floppy ears and orange makeup and I had to wear tights. I think I went on and danced around for about 40 seconds or something. I hope nobody ever digs up a picture of me in that, because it was embarrassing." Marcia and Alan never liked the idea of Dan having a career in acting, but when Dan was 10 years old, they warmed up to the idea of letting Dan try out in David Copperfield (1999) which was produced by Kate Hardwood, a close friend of theirs. "My mum sent in a Polaroid of me to the BBC, because I've always wanted to act since I was five," said Daniel. "My mum and dad never thought it was a very good idea. So I went for about five auditions and then I got the part." Dan made the star role as David Copperfield - that was his first Big Break. His second star role was in Tailor of Panama (2001), as Mark Pendel. Later that year, and two months before filming HP and the Philosopher's Stone, Chris Columbus (the director) was looking for someone to play the star role as Harry Potter. Dan and his dad went to the movie theatre and without knowing, in front of them was Chris Columbus! He went for a few auditions and won himself the star role! "Having seen Daniel Radcliffe's screen test, I don't think Chris Columbus could have found a better Harry." said JK Rowling. Those who have had the lucky chance to work with him say he's a wonderful screen actor. Kate Harwood (who gave Dan his first big break) said: "He has a particular quality of naturalness and innocence. The camera really loves him, and other children don't feel threatened by him. One normally dreads working with child actors, but in his case he was wonderful. We cast him for his special qualities of gentleness and watchfulness. He has those in spades. He has a great deal of charm and simplicity. He's very at ease with himself. He'll be terrific as Harry Potter because of his great sense of fun. He's very lively and energetic." |
