On the personal side
After pondering retirement following yet another successful season in 2000, Clara Hughes returns to the Saturn Cycling Team in 2001 to provide another year of senior leadership. Hughes, who is also a competitive speed skater, took 1998 and 1999 off from cycling before returning last year. A double bronze medalist at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, Clara has often proved she has the skills to be a major factor in any race.

Clara began her athletic career as a speed skater and like many successful athletes before her, started cycling in 1990 as a means of cross-training. In speed skating, Hughes is a former junior national champion and Canadian national record holder. When asked what athletes she admires most, she simply says, "Those with determination, passion, and desire because that is what is essential to succeed." When Clara is off the bike she enjoys a wide range of outdoor activities like camping, hiking, and climbing as well as more relaxing hobbies like reading, knitting and painting.
