| Biology Concentration | ||||||||||||
| My selection of a biology concentration seemed like a natural fit; by the time I entered Arizona State University, I already had three years of biology coursework under my belt. From these courses, I have gained an understanding of the natural world around me: its inner workings, processes, and usefulness. By studying at two different universities, I examined two different perspectives on the subject. While my studies at the University of Arizona were largely of a clinical nature, the biological courses I undertook at Arizona State were more of a sociological and philosophical focus. I learned cutting-edge knowledge and techniques in genetic engineering during my time as a laboratory assistant in Tucson. Through my general and organic chemistry work, I learned the tiniest details of the complex processes that drive life on this planet (and perhaps on others). Additionally, I saw how the practical knowledge I gained in clinical settings had a direct impact on the world outside of the lab. Even the fundamental processes of biology can be adapted to use in any situation. The scientific method is a useful tool not only for solving biological and chemical quandaries, but also for answering many of the questions that plague other areas of life. Science is inescapable, and as our world becomes more technically diverse, it will become much more a part of our lives. To understand biology is to understand how the world works, and this was one of my main attractions to the field. |
