| BIS 402, or the Senior Seminar, served as a capstone on my educational experiences. This class provided a way for me to more fully integrate my learning in the classroom with the sum of my other experiences. Various topics are available to BIS students, and I selected a course entitled Money and Meaning. Not only did I explore the functionality behind concepts such as good credit and consumer habits, but I used my interdisciplinary insights to explore the overall meaning that society attaches to spending and saving. The value of money lies in far more than in mere coins or bills. Our problems, our opportunities, and ultimately, our lives are completely intertwined with our use or misuse of the money we have at hand. Our financial selves are often the ones that banks, corporations, and even our fellow citizens use to value us. In BIS 402, I explored my own habits of spending, and the feelings and meanings I attached to financial wealth. From multiple perspectives, I was able to objectively view myself and others, and use this knowledge to evaluate my spending and saving. Eventually, I can work towards the financial goals (and meaning) that I desire, and can attach a larger meaning to money and the world around me. |
