Sir William Oliphant was retoured heir of Sir John, his father, in the lands of Gallery and others in 1417. He witnessed a charter 27 August 1421. He was sent to England early in 1424 as one of the hostages for the payment of the ransom of James I on that King's release from captivity. He was still detained 3 December 1425, after which there is no further record of him. He is presumed to have been the father of: - 1) Sir John, the next Chief 2) Isabel, married to Sir John Scrymgeour, Constable of Dundee
