Where in Ireland did we come from?

Info listed on the Mormons Familysearch.org site

On this page I'll post info about various locations as I accumulate it. I also will have info on where in the past people lived.

Locations around 1300

I may have found several references to our famiy in a very old book. It talksof a "gillamoyle clan" a branchof the macNamaras. They aren't found at any later dates. The are would be east Clare just east of the nwe Shannon Airport

Locations in 1600

Bryce Normoyle of Melbourne somehow got some new info on this. In the genealogy books they mention a MacEnormoyele found in a "faint" in 1603
All that remain of these English documents are lists of names. From "The Irish Fiants of the Tufor Soverigns: I found the following which are included in various lists.
McEnormoyele Cahell, pardon 6765,
Nomoyge (moyge) co. Cork 5066
Nomoyne, co Cor 5066
Normoyly, Wm fitz James, pardon 6495
Normyla, Katherine, Wm fix'Davie, pardon 6575
Normyla Thomas fitz Davie 6575

I have a copy of the page with #6495 It has William Fit james Normoyly along with about 100 other names with no other info. I'm assuming the use of Fitz here is that it means "son of" to the Limies. This is about the time of oneof the last major attempts by the Irish to drive the English back were they came from

Earliest references

I can't find this story of Confhormaoile. I did fid in "triumphs of Turlough" a book written in 1450 about the wars in CoClare going on about 1300 several references of interest. There are several mentions of a clan gillamoile. They were a branch of the MacNamaras. Whenever they listed the branches of the Macs they are there. 2nd in same book they mention two fellas probably MacMahons who were "leopards of Formoyle" with no other info.

I was sent a partial genealogoy listing of people form Clare. It refers to a Normoyle married to a Macnamara. I think this is befpre or right around 1600. He wouldn't get listed if he was a nobody.

Locations in 1822

From the Tithe Applotment
Forthe most part the locations are the same as shown in the Griffiths list from 1855. Some fothe Normys had beeen driven off the land and died or immigrated and wouldn't be there for 1855. There had been quit a bit of immigration by 1855. In Illinois and wisconsin where I am most familiar I'd say 20_25 Normys had immigrated around this time and show up for sure in1857.BR> If your interested in an area I don't have let me know

Origin and Dispersment

Well long ago the Celts(we're Celts) left their homes on the Steppes of Russia, (or Germany according to who you believe) stopping on the way they terrorized Rome and sacked it around 387 BC . I've read that the branch who settled in Co. Clare came by way of Spain.

The Dal gCais, the tribe we probably came from show up in East Clare drive the in habitants out and take controll. They arrived in ireland over 2,000 years ago

The history of our family that can be documented begins in 1603 with a fiant (some English legal thing) with the name MacEnormoyele in it. These were petitions or pardons from or to the English crimanals who had just taken controll of our area.
In 1776 a Normoyle woman has married a Non-Catholic and had immmigrated to NY. I'd think these were related events. But this is the first record I have of either Normile or Normoyle. There a few others born in the 1700s that are found in records laater inthe 1800s.

The info in the two existant records from the 19th Century show most of the family near the Shannon and relatively close together. How did it happen that they spread out? It is after the famine around the 1850 that people start to immmigate and move much more within Ireland. One clues is in the book "Oceans of Consolation". They decribe how a family of Normiles had moved from near Doonbeg to Ennistimon a distance of over 30 miles. Somehow they had heard or found a farm to lease and I'm wondering if the some thing hadn't happend to some of the people who were furthest from the majority of the family. Also before say 1800 the population had been relatively low with less pressure on people to move.
I"v also been told that the family had been in Glin for 200 years. There is still quit a few Normiles in Glin, which is in Limerick on the coast. I read somewhere that even before famine times people were taking their own boats across the Shannon to find work. I found something once about a migration frm Clare to Limerick.

In the records there are quit a few instances of people with non agricultural trades. Lota Shoemakers(Glin, Kilmihil US). stonecutter, drapper(Glin). At least some of the family had left the land for the towns by 1850. Perhaps this was the reason for moving. There can only be so many shoemakers in an area. This is one reason I'm so interested in US City Directories. They list occupation and maybe tells what they did before coming to the US.

Glin

[email protected] (Helen C Gillespie) wrote
My Ancestors came from Glin county Limerick Townland of Tooraree. and some of them went to USA but when I don't know. Some names for you to look at:
Mary, Patrick, Johanna, James, Catherine, Ann, Bridget, Ellen or Helen, Margaret, John, Agnes, Cornelius all born between 1851 to 1873

John T Normile from Glin in Chicago around 1900. He lived in Chicago with Michael Normile a shoemaker who hd been in Chicago since at least 1870

Hubert Normyle says I think that his grandpa Michael Normile,Normoyle,Normyle was from Glin?

Adare

I have two souces from different times during the 1800's

James Normoyle and Bridget Hannan who were married 29/2/1840 in Kilcornan Parish, Stonehall, Co. Limerick Adare.

They had nine children
Daniel born 16/10/1840,
Bridget born 26/1/1843,
Michael born 4/1/1844,
Mary born 28/4/1845,
Margaret born 26/12/1847,
William born 27/3/1851,
Catherine born 8/2/1856 ,
James born December 12, 1858
Thomas born November 28, 1863.

Thomas emigrated to Australia (family history suggests with three of brothers and a cousin). He married and had several children
William (who apparently ran away from home and ended up in the U.S.)
Leslie,
Mona,
Doris,
Thomas,
Ada,
Edward,
Christopher
Leo.

Limerick Regional Archives - Baptismal data for issue of James Normoyle and Bridget Hannon.
Date Name Godparents
16/10/1840 Daniel James Nash and Jane Nash
26/01/1843 Bridget Patrick Normoyle and Mary Normoyle
04/01/1844 Michael Michael Shaughnessy and Margaret Hannon
28/04/1845 Mary Michael O'Shaughnessy and Mary Normoyle
26/12/1847 Margaret Daniel Normoyle and Mary Normoyle
27/03/1851 William Patrick Shaughnessy and Mary Young
08/02/1856 Catherine Michael Kirby and Mary McCann
12/12/1858 James Thomas Hickey and Mary Kirby
28/11/1863 Thomas Thomas Normile and Anne Fitzgerald
Obviously the Normoyles named as godparents were most likely James' brothers
and sisters and Margaret Hannon was presumably the sister of Bridget.
All baptisms recorded in Kilcornan parish. Thomas's mother's name is given as
Shanahan however this is most likely a mispelling of Hannan
Limerick Regional Archives record a marriage between James Normoyle and
Bridget Hannan on 29 February 1840 - witnessed by John McCoy and Mary Heaphey.

"I am researching a Normoyle/Normile family in Co. Clare. Please let me now if any of these names are familiar to you.
Bridget Normoyle (b. abt 1852 -d after 1893, daughter of Thos. Normoyle) married Joseph Kett (b 1835-41 - 1893, father John?) Their children were:
Michael "Wallace" Kett b. 1878 married Nora Walsh; Mary Kett married Michael McGrath; Catherine Kett"

"My Bridget Nomoyle was married in Cooraclare Chapel in Kilmihil. Her father was Thomas, a farmer. I have a copy of the marriage record. There were several generations of Normoyle/Normile (both spellings have appeared in papers of the same persons -- apparently a lot of the spelling was phonetic) in the Kilmihil area who were shoemakers. A shoemaker family appears in the 1901 census.

>Thomas Melican came to Australia in 1855,I believe he was born in Kilmihil Co.Clare.His parents were John Melican and Catherine Mungovan. The only other relative we know of was Ellen Melican who married Michael Normile maybe around 1865 in Kilmihil??
Their children-Catherine,Maria,Ellen (born1868)Susan&Anne went to Australia. Margaret(1874-1904)&Jane stayed home. Michael died in early manhood. Susan&Anne came back to Kilmihil. Maria's married name was Considine and Ellen's was Egan.

From Bryces Normoyles Australian Normy page
"Susan returned to Ireland about 1904 as her sister,Margaret, was seriously ill.In April 1909 Susan married Denis Breen,a publican,in Kilmihil.
Anne also returned to Kilmihil about 1915,she had been more than 25 years in Australia. She married Martin Scanlan who had a bootshop in Kilkee.

Another Scanlon-- there seems alot of interbreeding with them and is it a coincidence about the bootshop? There have been Normy bootmakers in Kilmihil for at least 100 years and probably longer. I've seen at least 6 cases of Normys and Scanlans marrying.
Kilmihil Cemetery:
"Erected by Ellen Normoyle in memory of her beloved husband Michael Normoyle of Kilmihil.Died 4Nov.1901 Aged 70 Also her daughter Margaret died 25 July 1904 Aged 30.If Ellen Melican was a similar age to her husband she could have been the sister of my ggrandfather Thomas Melican who was born about 1831.Nobody is sure of their actual relationship but the Normile girls were very much a part of the Melican family here in Australia."

Timothy Normile emigrated form Clare in 1846 via NY His parents were Thomas and Margaret The had 9 kids Thomas, William Michael Joseph James Peter Timothy and Margaret

Mormons Information on the Family

The Mormon church has been collecting genealogical information for years. They have collected an enormous amount of information. This is all on microfilm which can be borrowed. Most of what they have is available through their Family History Centers.
Below is what was on their site a few years ago. More is put on all the time. At some of their Family History Centers are people who are very helpful and know alot at others, they don't know anything.
The Batch # below would be the film of the original record. They list the maiden name of the mother which should interst some people.
