1.
Charles & Edith (Thompson) Andrews:  my paternal grandparents, probably taken around 1940, when they were married.

2.
Andrews brothers & friend:  my grandfather Charles (left) with his brother Fred (centre) & an unidentified friend (right).  My great-uncle Fred Andrews enlisted in the army in 1942 & was killed-in-action in Italy in 1944, so this photo likely dates from the early '40s.

3.
Fred & Mabel (Elford) Dayes:  my maternal grandparents, taken the day they were married, April 20, 1935.  Grandma's dress was yellow organdy chiffon.

4.
Harriet (Futty) Dayes:  my great-grandmother.  She was married to Herbert Dayes, who hung himself in 1903.  This photo was likely taken after she was widowed, so between 1903 & 1915.

5.
John & Susannah (Armstrong) Elford:  my great-grandparents.  This is their wedding photo, taken February 25, 1885.  The men at back were, respectively (left to right) a cousin of the bride & a brother of the bride.  The women kneeling in front were, left to right, sister of the groom & friend of the bride.

6.
Edward & Sarah (Evans) Armstrong:  my great-great-grandparents.  This photo was likely taken around 1880.

7.
Edward & Sarah (Evans) Armstrong:  my great-great-grandparents again.  These are wall portraits probably executed around 1900; Edward was already dead & his portrait is clearly taken from the photograph of 1880 (see above).

8.
3 Generations:  my great-grandmother Susannah (Armstrong) Elford (left) & great-great-grandmother Sarah (Evans) Armstrong (right), & baby.  The baby is believed to be my grandmother Mabel (Elford) Dayes, which means this photo was taken in 1909.

9.
Elizabeth (Parker) Armstrong:  this photo is said to be of my great-great-great-grandmother Eliza Armstrong.  The photo has been cropped from the "original," which is a composite photo made from at least 5 originals some time in the early 1900s.  The original of this is in Scugog Shores Museum Village & Archives, Port Perry, Ontario, Canada.  Eliza lived from 1813 to 1894.  This photo was likely taken during the 1870s at the earliest, but her dress is of 1860's vintage.

10.
Susannah Elford & children:  my great-grandmother with 2 of her children.  The toddler is my great-uncle Bill, & the baby my great-aunt Verna.  Verna was born in 1897 so this photo must date from around then.  You would never know, to look at this photo, that my great-grandmother--who was only about 31--had lost 4 children within 3 weeks to diphtheria 3 years before this was taken, & William's twin sister had died of scarlet fever 2 years earlier, when she was only 3 weeks old.

11.
John & Susannah Elford & family:  my great-grandparents with their children around 1905.  At this point, they believed their family complete, which probably explains the expense of a group portrait.  However, my great-uncle Malcolm arrived in 1906, & my grandmother Mabel in 1909.  The children standing in back are Lizzie & Bill (there was9 years & 4 dead siblings between them).  On my great-grandfather's arm is Frances, at his knee Maggie, in the centre Verna, & the baby on my great-grandmother's lap is Ella.

12.
Edward Armstrong & daughters:  my great-great-grandfather with 3 of his daughters.  The daughter seated in front is Bessie.  At back from left to right is probably Jennie, & then Susannah (my great-grandmother).  Edward died in 1893, so from the dresses in this photo, we can date it to around 1891.

13.
Edward Thompson & daughter:  my great-grandfather with his youngest daughter (my great-aunt) at Wasaga Beach around 1938.  He was born in Melancthon Twp., Dufferin Co., Ontario, Canada on June 26, 1898.  When he was around 3 or 4 his family moved to 24 Bright Street, Toronto.  He enlisted in the army in 1916 while still seventeen years old, & was at Vimy Ridge.  It's said he lost a lung to mustard gas.  He died in 1972.

14.
Edith Andrews:  my great-grandmother.  Born Edith Emily Bunce in Clyffe Pypard, Wiltshire, she married Charles Andrews & they emigrated from Walsall, Staffordshire, England with their 2 sons in 1927.  This photo was taken at Christmas around 1965 in Prince Albert, Ontario, Canada.

15.
George Monckton & brother:  my great-great-great-grandfather on the left, with his brother William James.  This photograph was taken in a studio on Yonge Street in Toronto.  George was born in the village of Bradford, Ontario in 1855.  He married there around 1875 & moved to Toronto with his wife & children in 1890, so presumably this photo dates from around then.

16.
Sarah Armstrong:  my great-great-grandmother.  Born Sarah Evans in Magheraculmoney, Co. Fermanagh, Ireland, she survived the Potato Famine & immigrated to Canada West between 1852 & 1860 with her parents.  She was married at 24, had 9 children (all of whom lived) by 40, & outlived her husband by nearly 36 years, dying at the age of 91.
