A Few More Stories
Contemporary Seneca Indian Tales of the Supernatural
by: DuWayne Leslie Bowen
In the late 1980's I wrote 'One More Story.' It was published by Greenfield Review Press. The book is a brief collection of contemporary stories told by
Senecas about Senecas.
When I wrote 'One More Story,' I did so with no particular purpose in mind. I simply wanted to share these scary stories I heard during my younger days. These stories made lasting impressions. I still remember them. Forty years later I remember those summer nights fondly. This fondness is comprised of certain factors. These factors being time spent with our grandparents, a time at home before forced removal from our homeland, the river, and a life that
was ours.
I wish with all my heart that I was home. I wish with all my heart to be with our parents and with grandma and granddad. I think continually of our
life past. You had to have been there to fully understand.
The first book was written in a local language, so, likewise is this book. This is how the stories were told to me. I hope the reader will appreciate this
collection.
So.....once again I wish for the reader to imagine this Seneca storyteller. He is a tall slender man, white shocks of hair mix in with his black hair. He is
about sixty years old. His shirt is red flannel plaid tucked into his Wrangler jeans. His shoes are brown high-top work shoes. The store-bought shine is long gone. He sits on a straight-back chair. The listeners sit on chairs around him or they sit on a faded couch. It is evening, he takes a sip of green tea and he begins.....'This happened one time.....'
