Storm Keep was burning. The tan gargoyle watched as the flames engulfed his former home. He ran a taloned hand through his pale yellow hair. How things had changed during these past two months since the invasion of the warlord Raoh and his northern hordes. It was said the Raoh had come into possession of a powerful talisman, an ancient amulet of incredible power and was using the power harnessed within it to expand his territories. Slowly the warlord had pushed his way south, province after province falling beneath his onslaught. Now more than half the land lay under his control.
'What now.' Flynt thought as he turned to face the survivors of the clan. The attack was swift and sudden, occurring shortly after sundown. The gargoyles had only just awakened from the day's stone sleep and were caught unawares. Athol, their leader was dead, so now responsibility of the clan rested on the tan gargoyle's shoulders. The human army that defended the keep had been routed. Of the forty strong clan, only six other gargoyles apart from himself had escaped the carnage. No.. only five. Flynt walked over to the still form of a light pink skinned female gargoyle lying against the rocks. He knelt down, tears forming in his eyes as cradled her head in his arms, running his fingers through her dark hair.
"Nightshade." He whispered, as his eyes strayed to the wound on her left shoulder. He had seen his mate take the blow from the shadowbeast as the gargoyles began their retreat, and watched in horror as she plummeted from the sky. He had managed to catch her before she struck the ground, but there was nothing he could do to save her. Though they had managed to outdistance their winged pursuers, she had died in his arms before they had landed.
'Shadowbeasts.' Thought the tan gargoyle bitterly. Winged nightmares created by Raoh's wizards. Gargoyle-like in shape, these monstrosities were black with yellow glowing eyes. They were not as fast or maneuverable as true gargoyles but made up for this with a most deadly weapon. Poison. One bite or scratch from the creatures and death was inevitable.
Flynt rested his mate's head back onto the rocky ground and began searching for loose rocks to cover her body with. He could not risk a funereal pyre, the flames would no doubt attract attention, but neither would he leave her exposed for the invaders or scavengers to discover. He noted with appreciation other clan members following his lead and a short time later Nightshade's cairn was completed. He stood for several minutes looking at it in silent remembrance before turning to the remains of the clan.
"We head south." He said, and the clan took off into the night.

10 MONTHS LATER.
Raoh consulted his map. All of the southern lands were under his control. Now he had turned his attentions to the east. But all was not well. Twice now the eastern armies of Lord Tezuka had repelled his forces. He looked at his arch wizard
"How much longer, old man." He asked
"A week perhaps. The spells are complex and must be prepared correctly in order to harness the great power needed to operate the portal. It will take some time." The wizard replied looking at the warlord.
Raoh was an imposing man, tall and strongly muscled with long black braided hair. He walked up to the portal, which covered most of the east wall of the chamber. It looked like a giant mirror but its surface rippled and shimmered, like sunlight playing across the surface of a lake. He fingered the medallion hanging about his neck, an intricate gold piece set with a large green stone which pulsated slightly. He had been most fortunate to have discovered this ancient relic. It had become a part of him. It spoke to him. He could feel its energy diffuse through him. He looked over to the small altar nearby that had been constructed so he could channel its energy at will. Right now he was using its power to complete the construction of this portal.
"One other thing." The wizard said, interrupting the warlord's thoughts. " the shadowbeast numbers are falling. As you are aware they do have a limited lifespan. Shall I create more? The procedure is relatively simple. I can instruct my apprentices to begin the process shortly.
Raoh thought for a moment. "No. I don't think we'll be needing them. The ones left will suffice. I want all your attention focused on completing the portal. There is news that Tezuka is ready to mount an attack"
"Just think, " the wizard said. "With this portal you'll be able to transport to any place OR point in time and space."
"Good." The warlord answered grinning viciously. "I grow weary of this campaign against Tezuka. The armies of the east are stronger than I gave them credit for. Twice now they have repelled my troops. When it is ready I will simply transport my troops straight to his castle and take it from within. After Tezuka falls, I'll attend to these so called rebels harassing my kingdom." Raoh smiled at the thought. Soon he would have the world at his command. He was very happy indeed.

Flynt chewed on a piece of mutton as he warmed himself by the small fire. Tonight's raid had gone well. They had enough food to last a couple days at least. For the last six months the clan had taken refuge in the mountains, never staying in the same place for more than a couple of nights, raiding the surrounding countryside and generally causing havoc to the occupying forces. They had even been lucky enough to find other gargoyles, and now the small band numbered twenty.
He tossed the mutton bone into the fire, picked up his axe, and made his way to the entrance of the cave that was their home for tonight. He clapped the gargoyle sentry on the shoulder and gave him a smile.
"Get yourself something to eat, I'll stand watch for a while."
The sentry nodded his thanks and went inside. Flynt adjusted the breastplate he had 'acquired' from one of Raoh's soldiers. The thing was uncomfortable, but served as some protection from encounters with the shadowbeasts. He wrapped his wings around himself to help ward off the chill of the night.
Several minutes had passed when he noticed a movement in the sky ahead. It was his second, and closest friend, Errel, and his squad returning from patrol. The slate gray gargoyle landed and approached Flynt.
"Word has it Lord Tezuka is mounting an offensive against Raoh."
"I've heard the same thing." Flynt replied.
"The other bands will be joining up with his armies as soon as he crosses the border." Errel continued.
"And you are about to suggest that we do the same."
Errel nodded.
Flynt leaned back against the cave entrance and looked at his second.
"This human lust for power and conquest has cost us our homes.." he paused momentarily, his eyes sad. "...and our loved ones. Truth be known, if they wiped themselves of the face of the earth, I would not shed a tear."
"But." Errel said.
Flynt smiled 'Sometimes I think he knows me better than I know myself.' He thought.
"But, my friend..." the tan gargoyle replied. "Perhaps the time HAS come to finally strike back. I am sick of us all living like animals, scavenging and always on the run. Until Raoh is defeated we will never have our measure of peace. We will join Tezuka's forces."
"Time to give Raoh a bloody nose." Errel replied grinning. He turned to enter the warmth of the cave. "You coming? It'll be dawn soon."
"In a moment." Flynt answered. As Errel departed, Flynt turned his attention to the heavens, his eyes picking out the familiar constellations and stars. His gaze settled on a small group of stars, which in his minds eye, he could make out the face of his deceased mate. It gave him a small measure of comfort thinking that just maybe, it WAS her, watching over him and the events unfolding.
He turned and made his way into the cave. "Soon it will end, one way or another." He whispered.
*****
ONE WEEK LATER
The air was filled with the sounds of men shouting and the clash of weapons. Flynt and Errel stood on the edge of the rocky slope and surveyed the scene. An area of Raoh's fortress wall had been breached and the Tezuka's army assisted by aerial attacks of their gargoyle allies swarmed through the damaged wall.
Flynt glanced back at his clan. They were one of two clans kept in reserve, ordered to strike directly at the central keep. There was little doubt that's where Raoh would be, directing the defense of his fortress. If they could take the central keep, then the battle was won. The orders were to attack during the height of the battle, when confusion was at it's highest. And now was that time. Though Tezuka's forces had penetrated the defenses, Raoh's troops had rallied, stalling their advance.
"Now?" Errel asked.
"Yes." Flynt growled, "Now!!"
With a roar the tan gargoyle launched himself into the night.
*****
Raoh watched as the arch wizard prepared the final spells. Soon the portal would be activated. He had fifty of his best troops with him now and another fifty on standby, and, once it was open, he would personally lead them into the very heart of Tezuka's castle. After it had fallen it would be a simple matter to move more troops in via the portal. Plus he had two more armies coming in from the north. They were less than a day's march away from the fortress.
'Let the fool, waste all his men and time on this attack.' Raoh thought smiling. 'By time he realizes what has happened it'll be too late. He'll find himself surrounded with no where to run. Then my victory will be complete.'
*****
Flynt risked a quick glance at the scene below as he dodged a flurry of arrows fired from the top of the main keep. Tezuka's forces were being forced back, the initial advantage of breaching the wall lost.
'Not good, not good at all.' He thought. He pulled in his wings and dove straight towards the archers, rapidly closing the distance before they had a chance to release another volley. He smashed into three of them as he landed, sending them flying. Flynt's axe swung its deadly arc, making short work of any archer or soldier unfortunate enough to cross its path. From the corner of his eye he saw a second group of gargoyles glide in and join the melee. Within a few minutes the fight was over.
Flynt did a quick head count, breathing a sigh of relief. Apart from a few minor injuries, all of the clan were still standing. He turned and faced the leader of the second clan, whom he had met two days before in Tezuka's camp. He was a brown, stocky, barrel chested gargoyle a few inches shorter than himself, with two small horns protruding above his eye ridges and no hair.
"A well timed entrance Cormac."
"Well we weren't going to leave you to take all the glory!" the brown gargoyle grinned. The two clans made their way to the rooftop entrance leading into the keep. Errel peered cautiously down the dimly light stairwell, his sharp eyes picking detecting no movement.
"It looks safe enough." he said.
The group carefully descended the staircase and reached the bottom without opposition. Flynt glanced around the corner. The staircase opened into a large corridor branching off to the left and right.
"We'll split up." He said to Cormac in a low voice. "You take your clan left, mine will go to the right."
The brown gargoyle nodded in agreement. "Good luck."

*****
The clan made their way quietly down the corridor. Errel, having the sharpest eyes and ears among them all, had taken point and was leading a few yards ahead. The group was just approaching a bend when Errel's hand came up sharply, motioning them to stop. The slate gargoyle peeked around the corner and pulled his head back quickly before making his way back to the others.
"What is it?' Flynt whispered.
"There's a large pairs of doors at the end with six soldiers standing watch." His second whispered back.
Flynt thought for a moment. The only way they could go was forward, there was no sense in backtracking where they had already been. Besides, if there were guards posted, odds were that whatever was behind those doors was important, perhaps even Raoh himself. Slowly his mind formulated a plan.
"Wait here."
Flynt stepped around the corner and walked down the corridor. 'This is crazeee!' a small voice sang in his head, as the guards took notice of his approach, momentary looks of shock crossing their faces at the large gargoyles sudden appearance.
"Oh excuse me, I seem to be lost. I was looking for the kitchens. Would any of you care to point me in the right direction?"
The rasping sound of swords being drawn from their scabbards was the tan gargoyle's answer as the guards slowly advanced towards him.
"Hmm, I guess not!" Flynt backed up a couple of paces before turning and bolting back around the corner, guards in hot pursuit. The guards rounded the corner and skidded to a sudden stop, finding themselves confronted by twenty grim faced gargoyles.
"Going somewhere?" Flynt asked smugly.
*****
The portals brightness increased and a low hum began to emanate from it.
"It's done." The wizard said.
Excellent the warlord replied. Raoh walked over to the portal. He stood before it, and thought of his enemy. Slowly the image of Tezuka's strong hold appeared in the portals shimmering surface. Raoh concentrated a little harder and the amulet about his neck began to glow brighter. Slowly the image in the portal changed to the castle's interior. Its inhabitants could be seen going about there business. Raoh smiled. This was even better than he had anticipated. He turned to his soldiers.
"Prepare to move out!"
At that moment the doors leading into the chamber flew open as the gargoyles burst in, battle cries filling the air. Raoh's face became a mask of dark fury.
"Destroy them!" he shouted. "Destroy them all!"
*****
'Things could be worse' thought Flynt as he dodged the sword thrust. He moved in quickly, bringing his knee up hard into the soldier's mid section before knocking him away roughly with a punch to the head. Suddenly the air crackled above the tan gargoyles head, followed by a small explosion nearby. Flynt turned to see one of the clan thrown backward by the explosion, hitting the ground stunned.
Things had just gotten worse. Not only were they outnumbered, but now the damn wizard was throwing lightning bolts at them. Flynt turned as another soldier took a swing at him. He brought his axe up, catching the sword between its blades and twisted savagely, ripping the weapon from the soldier's grasp. Eyes blazing white with anger, the gargoyle grabbed his hapless opponent by the throat and with a roar, hurled him as hard as he could at the wizard, who was preparing to cast another bolt.
The soldier collided into the wizard with a thud, both of them going down.
Flynt turned his attention back to the battle and spotted Raoh. His description was well known and Flynt had no difficulty in recognizing him. The warlord was in combat with two gargoyles, both of which he dispatched with ease. Flynt hacked his way through the melee, cutting down any soldiers that crossed his path until he stood face to face with Raoh. With a roar of hate he leapt at the warlord, his axe raised. Raoh sidestepped the lunge and brought the pommel of his sword up against the gargoyle's head, sending him flying into the wall.
Flynt shook his head, momentarily stunned. No human could hit THAT hard.
He turned and saw the warlord advancing towards him, eyes glinting maliciously. It was then Flynt noticed the talisman glowing brightly about the warlords neck.
"The amulet of course!" the gargoyle breathed silently. Flynt threw his axe at Raoh and lunged at him a moment later. Raoh dodged the flying weapon, but not the gargoyle. Flynt slammed into the warlord, the impact knocking them both to the floor. Raoh brought his foot up and pushed hard against the gargoyles chest, flipping him off. But Flynt had been expecting something like this. Using the momentum, he opened his wings and glided a short distance, landing on the steps leading to the portal. He turned and watched as the warlord scrambled to his feet.
"Missing something?" Flynt shouted, as he raised his right arm. In his fist he clutched the amulet. He watched in satisfaction as Raoh's hands went to his neck, a look of utter surprise on his face. Slowly he lowered his hands and glaring hatefully at the gargoyle made his way towards him.
*****
The wizard groggily got to his feet and after a moment quickly appraised the surrounding situation. He saw a tan gargoyle standing near the portal. Was he holding the amulet? He raised his hands and began to chant...
*****
Raoh struggled through the battling figures, pushing gargoyles and soldiers alike out of his way.
"Give it back!!" He shouted at Flynt
Flynt watched as the warlord advanced. The amulet was burning in his hand, but he wasn't about to let it go. Out the corner of his eye he caught a flash of light. Instinctively he ducked, hitting the floor as the air above him crackled with electrical energy. The lightning bolt had missed him, striking the portal instead. Almost at once a bright light began to flood out of the magical gate, the low hum rising until it was almost deafening. All fighting in the room stopped as frightened faces turned toward the portal.
"You fool!!" Raoh shouted at the wizard. "What have you done!!"
Flynt hurried to his feet, but had barely taken a step before he was engulfed in a blinding light. The last thing he saw was Cormac's clan and a squad of Tezuka's soldiers enter the room.

Flynt's body felt like it was being pulled in all directions at once. The light was almost blinding, a myriad of colors swirling and changing before his eyes. He felt himself slipping in and out of consciousness. He watched as the colors slowly coalesced, forming the image of his mate hovering before him.
"Beloved." The image spoke, her hand reaching out. "I love you, now and forever."
"Nightshade.." Flynt moaned, reaching out to touch her hand. The image dissipated to be replaced by the swirling colors once again. There was a bright flash and an instant of pain as the amulet disappeared from his hand. Flynt shut his eyes. Blackness filled his vision as he lapsed into unconsciousness.

(The present-2008)
Thaylogs eyes scanned the clear night sky as he glided on a strong air current - looking for something, anything - out of the ordinary. All night long he had had a strange feeling, a premonition perhaps, that all was not as it should be. After studying so long under his mother's watchful eye, he had fully developed his own magical abilities and learned to be more 'in touch' with the forces that existed all around but had so long been ignored.
Everything seemed right, but . . . He shook his head with a low growl, mad at
himself for letting his nerves get the better of him. For now, he had much more
important thoughts to occupy his mind with - a new state and a new start on his
life awaited him not far from here. Pennsylvania has been his pick - a beautiful
area with lots of promise for his new company. Back in the late 1990's he had
grown weary of his parents company and boring ways. He had learned what he had
needed from them and decided it was time to try things on his own, after all,
the ivory gargoyle had much bigger plans, and now after 700 years
of
wandering, a way to see them through.
Thaylog glanced towards the ground as rapidly passed below him. It only took a second for him to pick out a clear stream as it lazily made it's way through the sparse woods. Just up ahead a clearing offered a perfect place to stop and rest for a little while. Yes, he thought to himself, a break was indeed in order - the summer's night warm and the trip ssince his awakening long. Perhaps luck would be his and a bit of hunting could be done. This area was miles away from a city and undoubtedly teaming with life - the early summer night, with its light wind and clear sky, should prove a good one for hunting.
As much as he loved the populated world and all the conveniences it offered, he still relished the opportunity to get away from it all and follow the paths he once had - far from humanity, it's dirty cities and all that noise. It had been along while since he had been able to enjoy the solitude and peace the wooded mountains could offer, why not make the most of it.
Silently, and unseen, he landed on the thick carpet of moss that surrounded the stream - the place bringing back vivid memories of his life in older times. Serene, beautiful and so different then how things were these days. With a small laugh he realized he couldn't really say which was a better way - then or now. Each had their own advantages and sorrows. Perhaps in time he'd see it come full-circle and the world would once again reclaim some of what it had lost all those centuries ago.
A quick scan of the area proved it to be empty of all life, even the soft breeze offered no hint of prey to be found - the soft trickling of the stream overpowering in the silence. Come to think of it, the night was too quite - not even the nocturnal insects gave their usual cries.
Ah, he thought with a bit of a frown, there I go again making something out of nothing. Thaylog quickly pushed those thoughts aside and knelt to drink from the waters.
The near eerie stillness was banished by a banshee like cry - a sudden wind ripping through the trees caught the gargoyle off balance. With a snarl he turned and glared in the direction the wind had come from - eyes glowing red as he scanned the woods.
A bright flash caught his attention - drawing his eyes upward. What had seconds ago been a clear sky was now rapidly filling with thick black clouds that were being drawn in upon themselves, as if some unseen force was pulling them heavenward. His eyes widened as he stared enthralled at the sight above him, tail slowly waving in nervous anticipation.
Without warning, the wind picked up again - gale force in it's blasts, yet strangely cold for the warmth of the night - dragging with it any lose leaf or twig in it's path. Thaylog raised a hand to shield his eyes from the debris not wanting to avert his gaze for even a second. Curious and a bit fearful, he watched as the dark clouds parted to give a glimpse of what lay above - the sight sending a shiver of fear through the gargoyle's tense body. What should of been a dark sky, peppered with countless stars, was now a distorted view into another world. Stunned and in awe, he continued to stare at the screen before him - mesmerized by what he saw.
A sudden, blinding light forced him to look away and though it lasted only an instant - the mere blink of an eye - when he was able to look again everything had returned to normal. Not a trace of a cloud or a hint of anything to suggest that the sky had been more then what it was.
His eyes narrowed a bit - impossible! Had he dreamed it all? If not, what did it mean? Well, whatever it was, if it had been real it was sure to attract others and he did not care to be in this area when they came. Might as well finish what he stopped for and get be on his way - think it over someplace away from here.
I have the oddest luck, he grumbled to himself as he knelt to finish drinking from the creek, casting more than one nervous glance over his shoulder at the sky. Just as he started to relax a sharp snap of a twig caught his attention. He paused for a moment to listen more carefully.
There it was again - someone or something was in the bushes to his left. Whatever it was not making any attempted to be quite either, that fact became obvious as the rustling continued. But just what was it? An animal? Woods like these should be teaming with wildlife. No, not an animal, he thought as he took a moment to see what scents the wind was carrying.
His eyes widened when he realized just what it was. . . another gargoyle! With the quiet and stealth of a hunter he got to his feet and slowly made his way to the area the sound was emanating from. This could prove most interesting indeed.....
*****
The tan gargoyle sat up slowly and opened his eyes, shutting them again as the world began to spin in front of him. He took several deep breaths, resisting the urge to vomit, and slowly opened them again. He looked at his right hand, which was throbbing slightly. The amulet was gone, the only trace of its existence was a burn mark in it's shape, like a brand, on his right palm. Flynt glanced up and looked around. It took several seconds for his numbed brain to take in his surroundings. It was certainly not the fortress. He got to his feet, every muscle in his body aching in protest. He pushed the pain aside and took a good look around. He was in a lightly wooded area standing on a grassy hill slope.
"Where the hell am I ." Flynt whispered to himself. Where ever he was, he was sure it had something to do with the explosion at Raoh's fortress. Tentatively he sniffed the air, detecting a score of alien odours. He was starting to like this less and less. He fought down the cold knot of rising panic in his stomach and turned his attention to the heavens. At least he'd be able to figure out where he was by the stars positions. He scanned the sky and gave a gasp of surprise, almost falling over from the shock. The stars seemed familiar, but...but they were different. As if someone had shifted them slightly. Flynt slumped back down onto the damp grass, his mind reeling, wondering what to do next. Suddenly his ears picked up the sounds of movement behind him. He twirled to his feet, instantly adopting a fighting crouch as he scanned the darkened woods ahead of him, his present problem momentarily forgotten.
'Now what?' he thought.
*****
Thaylogs sharp eyes easily picked out the lighter coloring of the gargoyle beyond the bushy growth of leaves. He had also seen it go from a sitting position to one more 'battle ready'. Not good - if he went waltzing over too close he could find himself against an opponent who may easily be more then he could take on. Not to mention the fact it might not even be a gargoyle as he knew them.
He paused for a moment to give himself time to think. It was obvious this one had heard his approach and was waiting for his next move. And chances were good if he could see that gargoyle, that one could see him as well. Best to keep his movements as non-threatening as possible.
The tip of his tail began to twitch in the odd habit he had picked up over the years when he was either deep in thought or on edge. This time it was due to a bit of both. With a soft sigh he reached out his hand to part the bushes to allow himself a better look....
The gargoyle on the other side either heard his movement or saw it and lunged - by only a fraction of an inch was Thayylog able to move out of the way and turn to quickly see the other catch himself before falling. In an instant the tan gargoyle spun around, every sign showing he was ready to attack again.
Clearly the sight of another gargoyle was not what the tan one expected for he drew a deep breath and paused. . .
Flynt stared at the other for a few moments, noting the unfamiliar armor this strange gargoyle wore - everything about this place suggested he was nowhere near his familiar home or lands. It was also obvious this one had no intention of attacking as he could of done so by now and, for that, he was glad. What he needed now was someone to tell him where he was and far better for it to be this gargoyle than some human, or heavens knew what else existed in this place.
Thaylog eyed the other suspiciously, he had seen the shocked look in the tan gargoyle's eyes. He was not from here, he thought as he remained where he was standing, tail beginning to show his uneasiness at this situation. More than once he had come face to face with his own kind and found himself at the wrong end of things - he did not care to travel that path again. Especially not with this one, who looked like he could handle himself very well in battle.
"Where am I?" demanded the tan gargoyle as his eyes nervously shifted to take in his surroundings.
Thaylog paused for a moment. Of course! He must of came through that ... that... portal or whatever it was. This could be very interesting he thought with slight smile.
"New York, I believe......" he began as he assumed a more relaxed pose, not feeling quite so threatened as before."... not really sure on that, I've been traveling since last night - could be some other state."
"New....York?" The tan gargoyle repeated, clearly the name meant nothing to him.
Thaylog nodded.
Flynt frowned, his mind trying to make sense of the situation, which was rapidly spiraling out of control. He stared at the ivory gargoyle.
"My clan was in the battle at the fortress... against the warlord Raoh..." he paused, noting the blank look on Thaylogs face. Surely not! Everyone knew of the warlord, after all most of the land was under his control!
"I have never heard of this warlord or any battle." Thaylog answered, wondering just what this gargoyle's home was like.
The look on the tan gargoyles face was priceless. Well, if he was from another place and time, as everything suggested, he was in need of an ally - better it be myself then one of my opponents, the ivory gargoyle thought to himself.
"I am Thaylog," he said as he took a few steps closer to the other. "And you are..."
The tan gargoyle quickly brought his glance back to Thaylog, tensing once again, ready to fight. "Flynt."
"Well, Flynt, you're method of coming here was quite. . . brilliant . . . it'd be best not to remain here too long. Humans are sure to come and investigate. . ." Thaylog was cut off before he could finish by a soft snarl from Flynt.
"Humans." He growled, recalling something from his past.
'Well, that's one thing we have in common.' Thaylog thought as he headed toward a rocky outcrop. "Come, we must go......I can explain more as we travel."
Flynt watched as the ivory gargoyle waited at the base of the rocks for him, then quickly turned to survey the area. What choice did he really have? He had no idea where he was. Instead of finding answers, he had found more questions.
"Very well." He said as he joined Thaylog. "I have no desire to tangle with the humans. I will come with you."
The two gargoyles climbed the rock face and took off into the night.
*****
"Tell me. . . just how did you come to find yourself here?" asked Thaylog as the two traveled in the direction he had been headed before his little break. He was very anxious to learn of this one's homeland and of this war that must of been going on.
Flynt took a moment to answer, his eyes busy searching the rapidly passing terrain below him for something, anything that was familiar. As the miles passed below them he began to realize with more and more certainty that this was not his home.
Finally he turned to look at the ivory gargoyle beside him. "Well. . .," he began as he started to recount his tale of the battle with Raoh at the fortress, trying to piece together the events that had happened when he found himself in the portal - that whole segment of time blurry and incomplete even in his own mind. It wasn't until he was now recounting the event that he realized how much he couldn't remember.
Thaylog listened with total fascination at the story - amazed that there really was other worlds in other times and dimensions. Sure, his mother had told him that she herself was from another planet, but he never really believed her. . . but now, with this. . .there had to be other levels of existence and if he himself could travel through them as Verlyn had claimed. . .
He was brought back to reality as Flynt finished his story with a deep sigh. Thaylog felt very sorry for his new companion - to lose you're entire world and be tossed into a whole new realm with no one that you knew or cared for and, most likely, no hope of ever seeing them again. His own immortality had brought about a lot of heartache for himself in the past centuries when he had watched loved ones grow old and die, while he'd always remain behind to mourn. Perhaps fate had dealt them both a kind blow in this recent turn of events. . .
It was then that Thaylog realized that Flynt was looking at him as though waiting for an answer or reply.
"What about here. . .?" asked the tan gargoyle, a bit annoyed that the other hadn't been paying full attention.
Thaylog gave a look of silent apology. "This world is very different from the one you came from. It is hard to even know where to begin. . ." The ivory gargoyle paused for a few moments. Yes, where to begin. Maybe it would be easier to show him than to try and explain. His eyes drifted towards the area ahead of them - in the distance he could see the bright lights of a town and a fairly big one at that.
". . . Perhaps it will be easier to show you," he said as he motioned towards the horizon.
Flynt looked where the other had pointed. "What is it?"
"A city. I'm not sure which one though. We'll stop there for awhile - I need to get my bearings and it will be good place to show you just what this world is like."
The tan gargoyle kept his eyes on the lights in the distance, dreaded anticipation forming in his stomach - curious as to what was there, yet a bit fearful in knowing that once he saw this 'city' it would bring him face to face with the fact he wasn't in his world anymore.

As the lights of the city drew closer, Thaylog glanced over at his new found companion. The tan gargoyles face was a mixture of awe and uncertainty. Flynt angled his wings and slowed down, eyes fixed on the scene before him.
"Never have I seen a place so large..." he said "...or buildings so strange. This city ...is it safe?"
Safe, thought the other with an inner laugh. Nothing was safe in this day and age! So much was changing and all of it for the worse. Ever since this new century had begun.....
Thaylog shook his head to clear those thoughts and turned to make his way towards one of the taller buildings. He needed to land and see exactly where they were - how much farther he'd need to travel to get to his destination.
Glancing over at Flynt he finally answered. "As long as we stick to the rooftops and away from prying human eyes it is safe enough."
The tan gargoyle's expression soured at those words. It was clear he knew about having to lurk and hide in a world that would not accept you. Another world, yet same situation thought Thaylog bitterly.
As they landed on the rooftop the ivory gargoyle continued. "Gargoyles aren't exactly the most popular beings - not ever since that little 'disaster' around 10 years ago." His red eyes narrowed at those words as he recalled those events. He had been there at the time - the beginning of the end. 'But, I have plans to put at least myself, and then maybe my kind, at the top of things.' he finished softly in his mind.
"What!?" Flynt said, slightly stunned.
"Its a long story, I'll tell you about it later." Thaylog said as he walked to lean against he railing at the rooftops edge and glanced out over the city - eyes going down to the brightly lit street below. Now would not be a good time to go into all of that.
"Just one surprise after another." Muttered the other as he walked over to join the ivory gargoyle. He too leaned over the wrought-iron railing and looked to the scene below.
Amazing! So bright and so.............so..........different! He thought as his mind tried to take in all his eyes were seeing.
Seconds later he felt a bit of anger rise in him - but it was not the gargoyles world - it was the humans world and they didn't want his kind sharing in it. Worse yet, he was getting the impression that gargoyles were rarer in this place then in his home land. If that was the case, then he had been lucky to run into this one. This was not a world he'd want to face alone.
Thaylog, having found what he had been searching for - a sign with the cities name on it, turned to face his friend. He saw the look of amazement and anger in the other's eyes and knew what he must of been thinking.
"All-in-all, I think you may enjoy some of the things my world has to offer. We are near the city I am headed for. If we continue at our current pace - we should arrive there a an hour before daybreak."
Flynt was finally able to tear his gaze from the world below and look at the other oddly. Now that statement he severely doubted. If gargoyles hide in shadows and on rooftops, what type of life would he lead? And why the heck did this one WANT to go to a city?
Thaylog smiled a bit, noting the look on the gargoyle's face. "This world is full of amazing things that I am sure you will enjoy - trust me on that." He stated with a laugh. "When we get to my new home, I can show you some of them first hand. Not just from some rooftop."
"How?" asked the other, a getting more confused then he already was. Did this one plan to just go walking into some place to show him things?
"I have plans - big plans in store for me." He began with pride as he walked a few paces away before turning to face Flynt again.
"I will not hide in dark corners and deprive myself of the good things this world has to offer. I deserve more - our kind deserves more..." his voice growing angry as he stated those words. "...and if the humans won't share willing, then I will put myself in the position to not just take what I want - but to have power as well."
His red eyes glowed slightly. "Thaylog Legacy is going to be a name humans will respect and fear."
Flynt glanced at the ivory gargoyle - a bit taken aback. What the heck was he talking about and how on earth did he even think he could have power in a human's world?
Thaylog noticed the look in the tan gargoyles eyes. 'Great,' he thought, 'just scare him off or have him think you're a total wacko Thay!' He calmed himself. "Sorry, I have some ideas and get a bit carried away at times. Just trust me in saying that we will have a good spot in this world. If you want to join me, that is."
The other thought for a moment and turned to look back over the railing at this new place, his mind full of doubts. Power...in a human's world? He turned his attention back to Thaylog. He rather liked the ivory gargoyle, and if he was capable of doing even half the things he had said.....
Flynt stepped forward and extended his hand, Thaylog returned the gesture, gripping the tan gargoyle's hand in his own.
"I have my doubts, and do not fully understand this strange situation." Flynt said. "But you have shown me kindness and offer friendship. For this I am truly grateful. I will go with you."
"Great," stated Thaylog as he walked over to the rooftops edge. "Come, we must be going - I want to finish up my journey tonight." With that he took off into the night - Flynt quickly following.
*****

A half hour before dawn they arrived at Thaylogs destination - a large city in Western Pennsylvania. Perfect for a newly forming corporation yet close enough to the wooded mountains for the gargoyle to get away from the modern world without having to travel a great distance. It had taken him a long time to decide upon where to move to - where to start things up at and he was proud of the choice he had made.
Flynt silently followed, not at all sharing in the excitement the other was obviously feeling. He was filled with concern, concern over just where they'd be taking up residence in this city, among other things. Hopefully on the outskirts, he thought sourly. He did not favor the idea of having to live in the middle of a human city, or having to hide like a rat. The fact that humans were not pleased of gargoyles didn't sit well either. Dread and worry welled up inside of him forming a very unpleasant ball in the pit of his stomach.
Thaylog lead him to the northern side of the town, near the city's center - full of tall, modern buildings. At this time of the day most were just beginning to start up with the days routine - heavy traffic and fast moving pedestrians filling the streets below. Flynt was amazed at the sheer number of humans he saw. He had known the city had to be teeming with life just by the sheer size of it, but seeing so many people - like that, all at once. Unbelievable!
The tan gargoyle glanced at the other by his side - easily telling by the look on Thaylogs face that he was searching for something. A few seconds later he turned towards a tall black glass and marble building - one of the tallest in the area, and from the looks of it, one of the newest as well.
To his utter amazement the ivory gargoyle soared over and landed softly right on the top balcony, not the rooftop - the balcony! What was he up to? Was he crazy! Whoever lived there might see him!
Hesitantly Flynt continued to circle in the sky - watching and waiting to see what the other planned to do. Thaylog glanced up, his impatient expression clearly telling the tan gargoyle to get down here.
With a look of utter confusion on his face, Flynt landed next to him a few seconds later. "Why land here? Someone might see us!" he snarled in a low whisper.
Thaylog smiled, shook his head and walked over to the balcony doors.
"uh........." muttered Flynt, wanting to state a warning that doing that might not be a good idea, but it was too late. Thaylog had opened the door and stepped inside.
The ivory gargoyle turned to look at the other still out on the balcony, a very amused look on his face. "Well - we really don't have much time - are you going to stand out there till the sun rises or do you want a quick tour of our new home?"
The look on the tan gargoyles face nearly made Thaylog laugh out loud. "Yes, it is mine. I own it and the company below." His eyes and voice beamed with pride.
Flynt, still in a bit of shock over all that had happened tonight, cautiously walked over and entered the penthouse - Thaylog quickly stepping out of his way so he could get a full view of what lay inside.
A world like he never could of imagine spread before him - there was so much, all of it so new to him, that he didn't even know where to rest his gaze. As his eyes searched the rooms he found bit of small comfort in finding a few items he could name - a bit of weaponry, a few pieces of old looking furniture. But the majority of it...........
Thaylog walked over and rested his hand on the tan gargoyles shoulder. "I know it must be a shock - but in time, it'll become familiar. Even I, who have lived here all my life find some of their works utterly amazing."
"And this........." began the other. "Is yours? All of it?"
Thaylog nodded. "I have quite a bit of wealth actually."
"How?" asked Flynt, mind reeling from all the changes he had had to face in so short a time. How glad he was that dawn was only a few minutes away and he could get some rest. Maybe this was all an after effect of that magic - some sort of dream. Perhaps when nightfall came he'd be back in his world in his time. How he feverently hoped so! Not that he was ungrateful for this one's kindness - but he wanted to go home. Back the normal world and it's ways. This was all beginning to become too much.
"It is a very long story.............and not only do we not have the time to go into it, but I think you've had enough for one night. I can not imagine the shock you must be going through." The other stated, a bit worried on how all of this must be affecting the other inside. To lose one's home - one's time - that was something he couldn't even begin to fathom.
Thaylog turned and looked out the balcony doors - the sky was growing lighter as the sun neared it's time to rise.
"Come, we it is nearly dawn - we can spend it on the balcony ledge. Tomorrow is a new night and I can explain more then."
Flynt, eager to have this night over with, didn't even say a word - simply followed the other out onto the balcony and took up a spot on the wide marble ledge. The timing had been perfect for no sooner had he done so then the first of the sun's rays crested the horizon, bringing him the bit of rest he long desired.

The Next Night.
"And that," finished Thaylog as the two ate their dinner in the large dinning room that had an impressive view of the city. "is what started the humans to knowing who and what we are."
Flynt sat quietly, pushed what remained of his meal around on the plate, deep in thought. That tale had been a strange one. He could understand about hating humans, but the length that female, Demona, had gone to try and destroy humanity! It near made him shudder. Remarkable, how one foolish action all those centuries ago had spawned The Hunter, firstly of her, and then her kind - making all their lives a dangerous one these days. He wondered if she ever regretted her actions that night, ever realized that all this stemmed from that one incident.
A good two hours ago he had awakened to find that his situation had not changed as he had hoped. Oh, he had know it was a foolish hope, but still he had held onto it. Well, if here was where he was, then he might as well accept that fact and start to live.
Thaylog had given him a tour of their new home, over-excitedly showing him all the remarkable items in it. The TV, the computer, the kitchen. In fact, at times he wondered if the ivory gargoyle would ever shut up! He had actually been left more confused by his lengthy descriptions and attempts at showing him how to use them then he had been the last night.
The ivory gargoyle must of finally realized he was trying to explain too much too soon and set about making dinner for the two of them. Then, he had spent the last good hour explaining to him the events of decades, and centuries ago, concerning that Clan in Manhattan and how the current view on gargoyles stemmed from the events that had taken place there. It became obvious from his words that he had not always lived there, though Flynt got the impression that the leader of that Clan, Goliath, was in someway related to him or to someone he knew. Then he got off on Thailog with the "i" and himself, the Thaylog with the "y" and he was totally lost. The more he tried to get him to explain, the more confused he kept getting. Once things began to make more sense he'd have to ask for him to clear that up a bit. In fact, now that he thought on it, he really didn't know much about his new friend's past, but he was willing to let that tale go for another day.
Thaylog stood and walked over to look out the floor-to-ceiling window that spanned the entire length of the dinning room. "What they do now with their lives is their concern. I really don't care." He said with a pause. "Well, I care about Xanatos' and I also care about my father's as I am in competition with them, but as for them personally...."
With that he turned to face Flynt. "Things are starting to change in this world - the law system is being torn apart in ways I never imagined could happen. It is a scary thought as to what the outcome can be. But, on the good side, this shift in power can allow me the chance to take control - to come out on the very top of things."
Flynt continued to watch Thaylog as he paced a bit, thinking on some private thoughts and where they might lead. He wasn't exactly sure what he was talking about or where he was going.
"I am forming my own corporation - the groundwork for which I have laid a long time ago. Knowledge gained from my father, and from life, has now allowed me to set all this up. If I play things right the chances are good I'll be the one with the most power and money." Thaylog ended with a rather evil smile of pride.
Flynt looked at him, confusion showing in his expression. "Just what does all this mean?"
His friend's question brought him back to present time. Yes, that is true, Flynt would not understand all of what he meant. He thought for a few moments before he continued.
"This world will never accept us for what we are - there is no way that will ever change. It's been like that since the dawn of time and will undoubtedly remain till the end of time. Even in your world this seemed to be how things were."
Flynt nodded. That was indeed so.
He came back to the table and leaned over it, his hands resting on it's dark black surface. "However, the way this world works now - most high-ranking people are never even seen. It's all done via computers - that leaves the door open for me. I can go in, gain control and no one would ever be the wiser!"
Thaylog noted the look in Flynt's eyes and went to finish up his explanation. "What this translates into is this - a good way of life for us. No hiding, no living in abandoned buildings or having to search through human trash for our meals. I will have a bit of control in the ways this world is run and who knows, in time, may find a way to help all of our kind that remain in this world."
Now that Flynt could understand and he liked the sound of it. A chance to get one up on the humans, to be the ones in control! A good safe home .... security .... perhaps even a bit of power - Oh, he could grow to like that!
Thaylog was able to tell by the look in the other's eyes that he as beginning to get some of what he was saying. His tailed tip waved a bit in excitement. Finding this other gargoyle was a stroke of good luck! As happy as he had been with his plans there had been one thing missing - a good friend. All the power and the money in the world was fine (and he wanted it ALL) but, to have no one to share it with, no one to talk to......he was tired of that way of life. Tired of being alone or around gargoyles who didn't understand him. A partner in all of this could be a lot of fun. He could take him under his wing, teach him all he knew - he seemed intelligent and undoubtedly would have some brilliant ideas and best of all, didn't like humans but not in that darn 'Demona way' of thinking!
Perhaps I've found another friend like I had in Nikita all those centuries ago, he thought to himself. After that humans death in the 1300's he longed to find another true friend and ally in the cruel, cold world and that search had pretty much been fruitless. Someone who mirrored your own soul was hard in finding and from what he had witness during his 700+ year life, something few ever did. Could he be lucky enough to of found another?
"I wouldn't mind having a partner in all of this........." he began, looking at the tan gargoyle.
Flynt just smiled back, mind already running wild with the possibilities. Thaylog had been right - he just might find this world enjoyable after all.
The End
