Dear Duke,
You asked for my thoughts on being a student from Pleasant Hills who had to travel to Clairton High School.
Well, it truly was culture shock in the beginning because I had started my education in a one-room school in Iowa. Then, after moving to Pennsylvania I only attended public school for one year when my Mom moved us into St. Elizabeth Parochial grade school. We were able to walk back and fourth even for lunch. Quite a hike, but we usually had fellow classmates to walk with.
The shear size of Clairton High was overwhelming and the trip by bus was a real experience. We had a very no nonsense driver and any bad or dangerous behavior was punished on the spot. One student was expelled for tossing a firecracker out of the bus window.
I soon adapted and loved school. "I should have worked hard though." There was a slight sense of isolation since I had to leave with the school bus and was not able to join in after school activities or camaraderie.
My teachers were wonderful and I graduated with a great sense of pride in my High School. I have very positive memories of many of my teachers. Latin-Miss Wills, French-Mrs. Furno. Janet Nixon, Mrs. Wilson, Mr. Blieler, Mr. Krivonak and Mary Stokes and even Mr. Stabler who, thank heavens, I never had to visit for a discipline problem. Who will ever forget Mr. Porter, Mr. Snizik and all of the others who guided me through those growing up years? My fellow students are all remembered very positively, with great memories.
Thanks so much, Duke, for this privilege and for your hard work in putting on the best reunion ever.
Sincerely,
Frances Richardson Campbell.
