Just as she is on the verge of a tremendous discovery regarding a strange, new genetic aberration, Sloan Parker's mentor, Dr. Ann Coulter, is murdered. Driven by intellectual curiosity and the need to know the truth, Dr. Parker discovers that this new genetic anomaly belongs to an entirely new species of human. And although she knows this new species to be extremely dangerous (one of their number may be responsible for Coulter's death), Parker entertains mixed feelings about them. Even as Parker's quest for answers endangers her, she finds her emotions for the new species vacillating between fear and admiration.
