1999 october 22futilitythe scene: the grocery store
claire: oh my god, do you remember this stuff? gene: what stuff? claire: this create a balloon stuff. it has this tube of gunk and a little straw and you were supposed to be able to blow the gunk up into balloony things but it... gene: ...never did anything other than make a gunky mess. i hated that stuff. and it smelled. claire: you just finished my sentence for me. gene: i did not. claire: yes, you did. but with less vehemence than i would have. i didn't just hate the stuff, i loathed it. i wanted those damn balloons and i tried and i tried and like a prepubescent sucker, i tried again. nothing. gene: then why did you just throw the package into the cart? claire: i'm going to take it home and pin it on the wall next to the desk to remind me of the utter futility of life and the inevitable disappointment of one's dreams dying a gunky death. gene: that is tragically pathetic. you know that, right? claire: of course, that's why i am also going to buy haagen dazs ice cream bars. the sheer joy contained within will easily offset the evil toy of impending doom and its depressing influence on my world. it's all about balance, claire
